West Bromwich Albion Hunt £1.5 Million Striker

Bournemouth attacker Daniel Jebbison has become the subject of interest from West Bromwich Albion, although they’re not alone in their pursuit; a host of other clubs have are tracking the young striker.

The Baggies finished fifth in the Championship last season, qualifying for the play-offs but losing to Southampton in the semi-final. Carlos Corberan’s side performed above expectations and are looking to build upon the momentum by snapping up the young forward.

The former England youth international joined Bournemouth from Sheffield United this summer for a fee believed tobe £1.5 million. He has managed 12 goals in 60 appearances across his senior career, impressing on a loan at Burton Albion in 2021/22. He smashed nine goals in 23 outings for the Brewers, with just three in the red and white of his former employer.

That still ensured he caught the eye of multiple clubs, with West Brom the latest to seek his signature. According to HITC Sport, Sunderland were unsuccessful with an earlier approach in the window. Their report also states that Norwich City, Stoke City, Hull City, Derby County, and Portsmouth have all made approaches, whilst Leeds United also have an interest.

That puts the Baggies in esteemed company as they try to strengthen their squad and go one better this season. So far in the transfer market, the club has bolstered its attacking options. Devante Cole has joined on a free for Barnsley, while young forward Lewis Dobbin has arrived from Aston Villa on a season-long loan. Josh Maja is also able to lead the line, but Jebbision would add depth to that impressive array of forwards.

Any move away from the south coast will be a loan move, with Bournemouth eager to get their asset some senior game time but not willing to sell so soon after capturing the youngster’s services. He may also be able to add ‘international’ to his list of achievements; he was named to Canada’s 60-man provisional squad for the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup, and is expected to make a debut for them with regular first team football under his belt.

Writer’s View

Jebbison is a robust and energetic forward with a big point to prove. Those international aspirations need regular football to be realised, so he’s going to want a loan spell that guarantees a degree of playing time.

That leaves the Cherries with a big decision; which team can satisfy those requirements? Josh Maja certainly impressed on the opening day, but he can’t carry the weight of expectation for an entire club. Football is no longer just an 11 man game – squads need to be big and as many as 15 or 16 players will end up taking to the field.

That means Jebbison should be looking for a side with few forwards, even if they currently have a main striker playing most of the time. his chance will come, but it has to be at a club creating chances and pushing up the table.
