Cardiff City Boss Confirms Bid For Defender

Cardiff City manager Erol Bulut has confirmed the club have received a bid for defender Mark McGuinness amid speculation over the 23-year-old’s future.

The Bluebirds reportedly value McGuinness at around £10 million but the value of the offer for the player is unknown, as is the club who made the bid. Championship rivals Luton Town are said to be keen on the player, with the Hatters looking to strengthen their squad which is currently decimated by injuries, especially in McGuinness’ position of central defence.

Speaking to WalesOnline, Bulut said, “Yeah, I think [there has been a bid].

“We are now on the level where everyone is talking about the transfer. [There] Should be something in that we are discussing right now.”

He did, however, say that the bid had been on the table for some time and that progress had stalled.

With Macca, it’s been like this for 10 days, he said.

“Everything is going up and down, but nothing is finalised. I am looking forward with Macca until something is finalised.

Slough-born McGuinness, who has represented the Republic of Ireland at youth level, has played 86 times for the South Wales outfit since joining from Arsenal in 2021, having also had spells on loan at Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday in his career. McGuinness has made one appearance for Cardiff thus far this season, having played and scored in the club’s 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers in the Carabao Cup first round.

Cardiff have had a mixed start to the 2024-25 season, having progressed in the cup but enduring a winless start in the Championship. The Bluebirds lost 2-0 to Sunderland on the opening day of the campaign and are reportedly still looking at incomings as they look to improve as the season progresses. Ongoings are looking likely though, and McGuinness could be one of those leaving the Cardiff City Stadium this summer.

Writer’s View

It’s looking likely that McGuinness will be moved on, but circumstances may need to change for a deal to happen. £10 million feels steep for the player, so Cardiff may need to lower their asking price to sell the player in order to reinvest in their squad. There will be interest, with other clubs in the division reportedly keen, and McGuinness will want more minutes than he’s currently getting. A move, therefore, feels in everyone’s best interest.
