Sheffield Wednesday have told Callum Paterson that he is free to look for another club, according to a report by The Star.
This news has put Paterson’s former club Heart of Midlothian on red alert after they failed in their attempt to bring their youth product back to Tynecastle last season.
The 17-cap Scotland international appeared on 25 occasions last term as the Owls managed to cling on to their Championship status. Paterson failed to score but was utilised across a host of different positions.
He was absent for a large part of last season due to knee surgery but was fit enough to play something of a cameo role in the final six matches of the season, helping Wednesday take 14 points and secure safety.
The fan favourite now looks set for the exit after being told his game time will be limited this season. The Hillsborough outfit has a plethora of strikers to choose from and Paterson’s contract expires at the end of this season so they could look to cash in.
Hearts attempted to bring Paterson back to the club in January 2023 under former boss Robbie Neilson. The Jambos look set to rekindle their interest with Steven Naismith now in charge.
Hearts have been busy in the transfer market this summer and have already brought two players north from England. Malachi Boateng and Daniel Oyegoke have joined from Crystal Palace and Brentford B respectively.
Should they manage to strike a deal to get the 29-year-old back to Tynecastle, he will add experience to a relatively young squad as well as an ability to play in multiple positions.

After being told he is not going to see much action, Paterson needs to leave his current employer.
A move back to his boyhood club might have a romantic edge to it but you would anticipate interest from south of the border too.
He would bring experience and quality to a Hearts team that will look to build on an impressive third-place finish last term and balance European football with their domestic endeavours.
