Bristol Rovers Set To Break Transfer Record In Latest Move

Bristol Rovers have made their next, record-breaking, move in the summer transfer window for Promise Omochere according to Football Insider.

Gas have made several moves in the market so far, signing several from League Two, including Walsall‘s Isaac Hutchinson and Joel Senior from Morecambe. Hutchinson was the only one of the ten signings to have been bought for a fee.

However, this is about to change with reports from Football Insider stating that Rovers are set to sign Omochere from Fleetwood Town for a club-record fee in excess of £500,000. According to their reports, they have beaten several other EFL clubs to his signature.

The mooted fee would break the existing record spent on Queens Park Rangers‘ Andy Tillson in 1992, with Bristol spending £370,000 for the centre-back. Hutchinson’s move from Bescot to the Memorial Stadium ranks fifth on the all-time list.

Should the move go ahead, it would be the third-highest sale Fleetwood will have made, with only moves for Jamie Vardy to Leicester City and James Hill to AFC Bournemouth beating the amount expected to be paid.

One of the sides beaten were Barnsley, who Bristol Live reported were the main competitor for Matt Taylor’s side in the battle for the Irish forward’s signature last week. Alan Nixon initially broke that Darrell Clarke was interested in bringing the 23-year-old to Oakwell.

The Cod Army were relegated to the fourth division last season under Charlie Adam and Omochere provided six goals and a solitary assist over the course of the League One season. His side have yet to bring a striker in this window, with Cheltenham Town‘s Elliot Bonds being the most high-profile incoming so far.

Omochere arrived in Lancashire in 2022 from League of Ireland giants Bohemians. He has made 71 appearances across all competitions, scoring 13 times.

Writer’s View

Promise Omochere is another great addition to what has already been an exciting window for Bristol Rovers. Isaac Hutchinson is probably the highlight of their transfers so far and has already impressed in his opening pre-season games. Turning a profit for Antony Evans whilst securing one of League Two’s top talents is another bonus for Matt Taylor’s side. The fee would be a new record for the club, so clearly the Gas believe in his talents.

Rovers have a strong forward line with Leyton Orient‘s Ruel Sotiriou arriving this summer to support Chris Martin and Luke Thomas amongst others. Omochere’s adaptability across the forward line makes him a helpful asset should injuries hit next season. He can operate behind the front line, which is one of the places the outgoing Evans could play, so this move does cover that hole since his departure to Huddersfield Town.
