Hull City Looking To Sign “Outstanding” £5 Million Gem After Ipswich Town Transfer

Hull City are in dire need of reinforcements this summer and have identified a rising star in the division below as the perfect replacement for Jacob Greaves, as per the latest reports.

It’s been a very tough summer for the East Yorkshire outfit so far. The club have yet to win a pre-season game after three matches, which includes a 4-0 defeat away at League Two’s Doncaster Rovers and a 5-1 loss in Turkey against Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.

Furthermore, the Tigers’ first-team squad has been decimated behind the scenes. Six of the starting lineup that featured in a 1-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle on the final day of the previous campaign have now left the club, including Jacob Greaves and Liam Delap who both made the switch to Ipswich Town for a combined £30 million after Kieran McKenna’s side were promoted to the Premier League.

Greaves, in particular, was a major loss for new head coach Tim Walter. The centre-half made 43 appearances for Hull City last season in the heart of the defence as the team missed out on a spot in the play-offs by just three points. Furthermore, he managed to get himself on the scoresheet twice and even recorded four assists.

Nevertheless, failing to return to the top-flight of English football was always going to mean that Greaves would move on during the summer but now, Hull may have the perfect replacement for the 23-year-old lined up.

According to journalist Alan Nixon on his exclusive Patreon, via the72, Walter’s side are set to make an ambitious move for Wigan Athletic defender Charlie Hughes. The report states that City have been tracking Hughes for quite some time but will need to fork out around £5 million to secure his services.

The 20-year-old has been a mainstay in the Latics’ first-team for several seasons, making 75 appearances for the club since his debut during the 2021/22 campaign. Upon signing a five-year contract last summer, head coach Shaun Maloney described the defender as “outstanding” and a “dedicated young man” with a “brilliant character”. However, Wigan may now struggle to keep hold of Hughes due to interest from the Championship but will ask for a hefty transfer fee.

Writer’s View

Hull City have recouped a lot of money in transfer sales this summer after the departures of some key players. Yet, the only players signed so far are Ryan Giles, whose loan deal was made permanent, and fullback Cody Drameh following his exit as a free agent from Leeds United.

If the Tigers have aspirations to finally earn promotion to the Premier League for the first time in almost a decade, the club need to start showing some ambition in the transfer window. Acquiring the services of Hughes, one of the best young players in the EFL, is certainly a way to do that.
