Former Sheffield United Star Set To Join Championship Promotion Rivals

Former Sheffield United, Cardiff City and Coventry City goalkeeper Simon Moore is on the verge of becoming Sunderland’s first signing of the summer transfer window, according to the latest reports.

Moore, brother of Morecambe shot-stopper Stuart Moore, moved to the CBS Arena back in 2021 after his contract with the Blades expired. However, after just 46 appearances in all competitions across his three seasons at the club, the 34-year-old will leave in less than a fortnight as a free agent.

Former Sheffield United Star Linked With Sheffield Wednesday Switch

The English keeper was Mark Robins’ first-choice between the sticks during the 2021/22 campaign. Nevertheless, in his second season with the Sky Blues, he was replaced by Ben Wilson in the starting lineup. Eventually, Brad Collins took over as Robins’ number ‘1’ goalkeeper and Moore was pushed even further down the pecking order as he failed to make a single appearance throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

Nevertheless, Alan Nixon has reported that Moore hasn’t had to wait long for his next club. The journalist is claiming that Sunderland, who could compete with Sheffield United next season for promotion back to the Premier League, are in talks with the experienced keeper.

Furthermore, Nixon has also revealed that, should Moore move to the Stadium of Light, it will be to act as a back-up to Anthony Patterson who is the main man on Wearside, although there has been rumoured interest from clubs in the top-flight for the Black Cats’ academy product.

Moore will likely be the club’s first signing of the transfer window which opened on Friday, while Sunderland have still yet to appoint a new head coach in the dugout despite it being four months since former boss Michael Beale was relieved of his duties. Nonetheless, Moore is set to sign for the club regardless of who will take charge moving forward.

The veteran has proven himself to be a worthy goalkeeper over the past few seasons and was one of the most important players when Sheffield United were promoted from League One in 2017. However, he now seems to be happy playing second fiddle for the remainder of his career.
