Coventry City are set to fight it out with Scottish giants Rangers for the signing of Aberdeen’s Connor Barron, according to a Coventry Telegraph report.
The 21-year-old came through the Aberdeen ranks and has represented the club on 76 occasions, with 42 of those coming in 2023-24. Barron participated in 24 Scottish Premiership matches and gained European experience in the UEFA Conference League.
According to the report, Rangers, who are managed by former Coventry player Philippe Clement, are now ready to ‘step up their interest’ in the player who is attracting interest from home and abroad.
The Sky Blues not only face competition in the race for Barron’s signature from north of the border but also from Italy’s Serie A from the likes of Cagliari and Bologna.
He provided an assist in Aberdeen’s defeat to Rangers in February and performed impressively in the closing stages of the season, particularly after the league had split.
The Scotland Under 21 international now looks set to leave Pittodrie as he is yet to sign the new contract offered by the Dons.
Barron is seen as the ideal signing for Coventry who failed to fill the void left by the departure of Gustavo Hamer to Sheffield United at the beginning of the last campaign. He is seen as a player who can offer a little bit of everything in the middle of the pitch, being able to win the ball back and create chances. The Dons’ man also fits the model adopted by the Sky Blues as he is young with room for development.

What a decision for Barron to have to make! One thing you would take as almost certain is his departure from Aberdeen but his eventual destination is far more difficult to predict.
Lewis Ferguson and Aaron Hickey have both recently left Scotland for Italy, with Ferguson leaving Aberdeen for Bologna in 2022. Surely a move to Serie A would appeal to Barron, particularly given the opportunity to join a fellow Scot.
Coventry faces quite a challenge to attract the midfield man to the Coventry Building Society Arena with the stature of the other interested parties. Rangers appear to be leading the race at present and Barron heading to Ibrox would not be a surprise.
