Peterborough United Set To Fend Off Championship Competition For Highly-Rated Defender

Peterborough United are expected to sign Rochdale centre-back George Nevett, who has been heavily linked with moves elsewhere, according to Fabrizio Romano on Twitter (X).

Nevett, who is only 18 years-of-age had a breakout season for Rochdale, making his debut at the start of the season and finishing it with 34 appearances, 32 of those being starts. Despite his age, the defender did by no means look out of place and was one of the Dale’s standout performers in what can be considered on the whole as a disappointing season.

Having missed out on the National League play-offs, finishing 11th, it comes as no surprise to see the Wales u19 international making a move this summer and he already seems ready for a step-up in quality. The sky is truly the limit for the youngster and he looks set to be joining a club known for progressing non-league talent.

According to Romano, Nevett is expected to have a medical today (Tuesday) prior to signing a long term contract with the club.

He wouldn’t be the first non-league star joining Posh this week, with the club announcing the capture of Altrincham standout Chris Conn-Clarke on Monday. The midfielder, who scored 22 goals in the fifth tier last term, is an incredibly exciting acquisition and there’s plenty to be excited about at the Weston Homes Stadium currently.

Although he may not be an instant starter, Nevett has the potential to become a mainstay in the Posh defence. He’s obviously buying into Darren Ferguson’s project as according to HITC, the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Queens Park Rangers, Millwall and Ipswich Town all displayed an interest in the youngster.

However, it is at Peterborough where he’ll have the best chance of consistent minutes, which could further enhance his development and it seems as if it is a good move for all parties. Posh will be hoping that their summer recruitment will boost their promotion chances after falling short in the play-offs in both of the last two seasons. Their current recruitment is rather impressive and the signings of Nevett and Conn-Clarke could make the difference next season.

Having been mightily impressive for Rochdale in the National League last term, it seemed as if it was only a matter of time before Nevett was snapped up by an EFL side. It’s by no means a surprise that the side he is joining is Peterborough, who love dipping into the non-league market and have had plenty of success.

At just 18 years-of-age, the Welshman is very much one for the future but he’s already proven in the senior game and is likely to play a role for Posh next season. It’ll be another great addition for Darren Ferguson’s side, who will be hoping to gain promotion back to the Championship. If their recruitment so far this summer is anything to go off, then they may well be able to do just that.
