Morecambe Manager Praises Side Following “Fantastic Weekend”

Morecambe boss Ged Brannan has praised his side following an Easter derby double victory, as the Shrimps beat both play-off chasing Barrow on Good Friday and local rivals Accrington Stanley on Monday.

Those two results leave Brannan’s side a mere two points off Crawley Town and the play-off places in League Two with just five games remaining. Furthermore, the two wins were much needed, following a four-game losing streak prior to the double delight.

Both matches were won by the north-west side by the same scoreline of 2-1 and it was a real team effort with four different scorers. Nelson Khumbeni, Chris Stokes, David Tutonda and Gwion Edwards all found the net for the Shrimps over the festive period.

Speaking to the media following the two impressive wins, Brannan said (quotes from the Lancaster Guardian):

“It was a fantastic win for us and a fantastic weekend with two derby wins that keep us right in there,” he stated.

“I can’t praise the lads enough today because they showed what massive hearts they have.

“We started the game superbly, passed the ball really well and got two goals, but they had us pinned in our half after the break and we had to show great character to seal the win,” Brannan continued.

“Reasonably Happy” – Morecambe Star Relishing Playoff Battle

“We said we would press them right from the start and it worked well for us and we got the two early goals.

“Our set-pieces were excellent with some great deliveries and put us in a good place – but we had to show the other side of our game at the end to keep them at arm’s length and keep hold of the three points.

“The league is nuts with everyone beating everyone else and we just have to keep going and see what happens.”

Morecambe now face Doncaster Rovers this weekend who themselves have lost just once since the end of January in League Two. The Shrimps then have a tricky double header against promotion and play-off hopefuls Stockport County and Crewe Alexandra.

Morecambe have hit form at just the right time and now have five cup finals to go, where they will be aiming for as many points as possible. With Micky Mellon being recalled from his loan spell in January, they were expected to struggle for goals but the team have all dug in.

The Shrimps boast a mix of experience and youth in their squad and surely will only need a few signings to tweak how they are playing. If they don’t go up this year, Brannan’s men will be set for an assault on the league heading into next season.
