Queens Park Rangers are eyeing defensive reinforcements this summer and have turned their attention to League One, according to the latest reports.
Marti Cifuentes became a God-send for the West London club this season when he was appointed as Gareth Ainsworth’s successor in the Loftus Road dugout. The Spaniard, who had no prior experience in English football, guided the club from six points below the dotted line to six above the drop zone following three wins on the spin to close out the campaign, including an emphatic 4-0 thrashing of Leeds United at home.
Nevertheless, the 41-year-old has already been working with the recruitment department and the board to strengthen the squad ahead of next season in an attempt to avoid yet another relegation dogfight in England’s second tier.
Football Insider reported this afternoon that Queens Park Rangers are set to battle it out with Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday, Millwall and Swansea City for Rotherham United defender Cameron Humphreys who still has twelve months remaining on his contract with the Millers.
Having already sold goalkeeper Viktor Johansson to Stoke City for a reported £1 million, after the Potters activated his release clause, the outlet are claiming that Rotherham could now cash in on interest in Humphreys following the club’s relegation to League One this season. The 25-year-old boasts a market value of between £1-1.8 million, as per FootballTransfers.

This news comes in light of rumours that have been circulating regarding Jake Clarke-Salter’s future at Loftus Road. Teams in the Premier League and the Championship are set to go to war for the Chelsea academy graduate’s services this summer.

Humphreys was one of the best performers for Rotherham throughout the campaign despite the club dropping down to the division below and is a player who the South Yorkshire team can get the most money for to offset their losses after being relegated.
This could be a really good signing for Queens Park Rangers for a decent price. Humphreys has experience in the Championship and at 25, still has a lot of room to develop into a better player. He could potentially be the replacement for Clarke-Salter, should he leave this summer, or even Steve Cook who is now in the twilight years of his career.
