Sheffield Wednesday Target “Won’t Come Cheap” This Summer

Sheffield Wednesday are hoping to bring Ike Ugbo back to the club this summer after a successful loan stint at Hillsborough but the attacker “won’t come cheap”, according to the latest reports.

The Canada international has plenty of experience in English football, having emerged from the Cobham academy at Chelsea before spending time with MK Dons and Cardiff City. Eventually, he moved on loan to South Yorkshire from French club Troyes. During his time with the Owls, Ugbo bagged seven goals and recorded one assist in 18 appearances in all competitions.

Sheffield Wednesday Star Tipped With Move To League One Pair

The 25-year-old has now returned to France but Troyes, who are part of the City Football Group, have been relegated from Ligue 2 to the third tier of French football. Nevertheless, it has been said that this relegation won’t make it easier for clubs to sign Ugbo over the coming transfer window.

It has been previously reported that Sheffield Wednesday have made contact with Troyes to re-sign Ugbo this summer. However, journalist Alex Miller provided an update on the ongoing transfer saga on Sunday afternoon, claiming that the Owls face stiff competition from teams in England and abroad, while clubs in the MLS are “especially keen”. Furthermore, Miller has stated that Ugbo “won’t come cheap” for any suitor who acquires his signature.

“Understand Owls face fierce competition for Ike Ugbo. Previously reported that clubs in England and abroad are interested, now told MLS clubs are especially keen.

“Word is he won’t come cheap despite Troyes relegation.”

Despite only spending half a season at the club, Ugbo finished the campaign as Wednesday’s joint-second-highest goalscorer in 2023/24 behind Anthony Musaba, proving to be a key component in a Danny Rohl side that managed to leap out of the relegation zone despite being bottom of the division back in October.

Thus, it’s not surprising that Sheffield Wednesday are keen to see him back in blue and white stripes next season. Unfortunately, his impressive form at Hillsborough has seemingly triggered other teams in England and around the world to take an interest in the forward which could hinder the club’s ability to bring him back for the 2024/25 campaign.
