Hull City’s Play-Off Chances Dealt Potential Boost

Hull City’s chances of making the Championship play-offs this season could further increase with the potential return of both Lewie Coyle and Ryan Giles for their clash with Middlesbrough on Wednesday night.

Both players would be on the sidelines for the Tigers’ impressive 3-1 victory away from home at Cardiff City on Saturday but could soon be back in the squad if their respective recoveries go to plan.

It was an incredibly important victory for Hull, who still retain play-off ambitions this season. With each of the three teams ahead of them also winning, it was an important victory which keeps Liam Rosenior’s side still in the play-off hunt with six games left to be played this season.

Although they do sit six points off of sixth-placed Norwich City, the Tigers significantly have a game in hand and will be hoping that they can build some winning momentum after defeating Cardiff at the weekend. That was the club’s first victory in their last six games and although they face an uphill task to make the play-offs this season, they’re still in with a chance.

Those chances of making the play-offs could further increase with the news of two first team players potentially being available for the proverbial six-pointer with fellow play-off chasers Middlesbrough on Wednesday night.

Both club captain Coyle and on-loan Giles have seen significant playing time this season and are important cogs in the Tigers defence. Having both missed the win over Cardiff, they’ll be rather eager to get back into the starting line-up and may well do just that on Wednesday if fully recovered.

Speaking to Hull Live, manager Liam Rosenior gave an update on both players’ respective injuries.

“Lewie (Coyle) , it sums him up, he was in a lot of pain after the whack that he took against Leeds. He was like ‘gaffer, inject me, I want to go out and play.’ We’ve got three games in a week and I need to manage the squad, I also need to look after the players.

“I knew it would be a physical game. Cardiff are really, really good from set plays. Coylely will come right back into my thinking for the next one.

“Gilo (Ryan Giles) is touch and go for Wednesday, so it’s not a big injury, he wasn’t quite ready to train (on Friday), so we wanted him to stay back at home, not get on a plane and travel down and make sure that he’s rested up. I thought Matty Jacob didn’t put a foot wrong, I thought he was magnificent.”

It seems that it is almost a certainty that Lewie Coyle will return to the squad on Wednesday night which is a huge boost both on and off the pitch for Hull. Ryan Giles may be given further time to rest, especially with Matty Jacob impressing on Saturday. With a congested last few weeks of the season, perhaps that is the best option to not risk aggravating his injury.

Although at this point it is an outside chance of making the play-offs, Hull still importantly have a chance. Perhaps the win against Cardiff can really kickstart a winning run, something that is certainly needed if they are to make the post-season this year.

A loss on Wednesday would all but end any hopes of making the play-offs this year, but they’ll be confidence in the camp after the victory over Cardiff as well as the potential return of two starters.
