FIFA 21 – The Improvements Lower League Fans Want to See

Alex Hunter

Alex Hunter FIFA 20 return hinted at by developer: "Watch this ...

We don’t necessarily want Alex Hunter back, but the Journey game mode gave FIFA a new element which we feel Volta did not. Not all gamers want to play against each other; some want the career mode and others are football fans who really gelled with the RPG elements of the Journey. Alex Hunter brought together two great game genres; football and role-playing. it was an adventure, a linear one which fitted a certain formula, but an adventure nonetheless. It did get a bit busy towards the end with three different characters, but it offered single players a reason to keep coming back, bagging new clothes, styles and the like.

Something akin to the Journey as a new game mode would surely go down well, certainly with us. Maybe a player could rise from League Two to the Premier League, or from a smaller nation to the big stage. It wouldn’t have to boast quite as much training (that became tedious), but the story element worked really well. Sacking agents, hiring PR staff and cultivating an image gave you control over your career in a way the standard modes did not.

Whilst we might not want Alex Hunter himself back, the general themes that EA began to develop worked well. Even Volta had elements we liked, but the garish branding, hip hop and youth speak was a big turn off for the older gamers amongst us (you’re sacked – Gary).
