Former Captain in the Frame: Celtic Coach Tipped for Shock Norwich City Return

Mark Fotheringham has emerged as a surprise contender to become the next Norwich City head coach following the sacking of Liam Manning, with club chiefs considering a left-field move for the former Huddersfield Town boss and current Celtic coach.

The 42-year-old, who captained Norwich during his playing career, only returned to Celtic Park a fortnight ago as part of Martin O’Neill’s backroom team. His name, however, has now surfaced in early discussions as the Canaries look for stability after dropping to 23rd in the Championship table.

Fotheringham’s surprise inclusion on Norwich shortlist

According to reports from Scotland, Fotheringham’s familiarity with Carrow Road and his coaching pedigree in Germany and England have caught the attention of Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper.

Fotheringham made 76 appearances for the club between 2007 and 2009, and his reputation for professionalism and tactical structure has grown during stints at Hertha Berlin, Karlsruhe and Ingolstadt.

Norwich’s decision to part ways with Manning followed an 11-game winless streak that left the club deep in relegation trouble. The hierarchy are said to be exploring a wide range of candidates, including several with previous Championship experience, but Fotheringham’s name has emerged as one of the more unexpected options under consideration.

“The recruiting in the summer was what it was because there was a big transition happening, we lost sight of a bit of data because of the transition,” owner Raf Khalili said in a recent BBC interview. “We will deepen our squad in January, 100%.”

The Scot’s managerial record at Huddersfield was brief but turbulent. He managed 21 games between September 2022 and February 2023, recording 5 wins and 10 defeats before leaving with the club mired in a relegation battle.

Despite that, his reputation as a meticulous coach with strong links to Europe’s elite has kept him on the radar for clubs seeking an organiser capable of galvanising struggling squads.

Norwich weigh risk against familiarity

While Fotheringham would represent a gamble for Norwich, his connection to the club and knowledge of its culture appeal to decision-makers seeking both renewal and continuity. With sporting director Knapper under mounting scrutiny, the next appointment is regarded as critical to the club’s Championship survival prospects.

The role would also mark a return to English management for Fotheringham less than a month after joining O’Neill and Shaun Maloney at Celtic. The Parkhead trio were brought in to steady the Scottish champions following Brendan Rodgers’ sudden exit, but uncertainty remains over their futures as Celtic move closer to naming a permanent replacement.

For Norwich, time is tight. A gruelling festive schedule looms, and the need for clarity before the January transfer window has added urgency to the process. The Canaries have lost 10 of their 16 league matches and remain 4 points adrift of safety, with supporters demanding decisive leadership both on and off the pitch.

Whether Fotheringham becomes a serious contender or merely a name in the conversation, his inclusion reflects the uncertainty surrounding Carrow Road’s direction. With the club still reeling from Manning’s dismissal, every option is being explored.
