Pundit Explodes Over Imminent Middlesbrough Exit

TalkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan has laid into Rob Edwards over his decision to leave Middlesbrough for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 42-year-old only arrived at the Riverside Stadium in the summer in what was his first managerial role since departing Luton Town in January. He was handed a 3-year contract and tasked with breaking into the top 6 after back-to-back failure to reach the play-offs under Michael Carrick.

Boro appeared to have struck gold with their new appointment. After an 8-game unbeaten run to start the campaign, they topped the Championship. Form stuttered a little throughout October, although they were still within touching distance of league leaders Coventry City.

Wolverhampton Come Knocking

Speculation mounted when Wolves opted to part company with Vitor Pereira earlier this month. Edwards has long held an affinity with the West Midlands-based outfit, representing the club over 100 times as a player between 2004 and 2008 before moving into a coaching role at Molineux upon his retirement.

The Premier League outfit made their first approach last week, which was immediately rebuffed by Middlesbrough. However, it soon became apparent that the head coach was pushing for a move when his press duties were cancelled ahead of Saturday’s clash with Birmingham City.

Showdown talks took place on Friday, meaning Edwards was absent from first team training. It was then confirmed over the weekend that the club had reluctantly allowed Wolves to enter into negotiations with the former Watford boss.

Jordan Scathing In Edwards Assessment

Edwards has come in for a lot of criticism over the past few days, although none more so than that from ex-Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan. Speaking on talkSPORT earlier today, he said:

“You would like to think that someone who had been given an opportunity would have a little bit more integrity. But he doesn’t, so he’s gone to Wolves. I hope he gets what he deserves. I hope Wolves get relegated and he goes down with them and suffers the consequences.

“I think he did remarkably well to get Luton promoted. I watched a documentary that he was part of, and I came away with a completely different impression of him than I had originally. I thought he was a bit of a flake. But then last year, Luton’s team dropped into the relegation zone and got relegated.

“So, he’s lucky to get a great job like Middlesbrough, working for a great chairman like Steve Gibson, who has been unequivocal in his support of Middlesbrough for 30 years. Of course he owes Middlesbrough something. They gave him a three-year contract.

“Now, he’s going to go to a club that I think is a crap job, quite frankly. I think they’re in freefall. I don’t think they have a squad of players that are going to keep them in the Premier League, I don’t think they have a culture motivated to be able to give managers the support they need on the field, because all their best players are being sold left, right and centre.”

Under the stewardship of first team coaches Adi Viveash and Harry Watling, and Academy manager Craig Liddle, Middlesbrough beat Birmingham 2-1 on Saturday to move up to second. Meanwhile, Wolves lost suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea to remain bottom of the Premier League, with just 2 points from their opening 11 games.
