Sheffield United Announce Ex-Forest Man As New First Team Coach

Sheffield United have announced that Guilherme Ramos has joined the coaching staff in a shake up of the Blades management.

The 40-year-old arrives following the reapointment of Chris Wilder last week.

A Fresh New Face

The 34-year-old from Portugal joins the Blades from French Ligue 2 club Caen, where he served as assistant manager, contributing to a mid-table finish amid a inconcistent campaign. Ramos’ broad career spanned continents: he assisted Nottingham Forest during their 2020-21 Championship struggles under Sabri Lamouchi and later Chris Houghton. Earlier, he worked at Bulgarian top-flight side Botev Plovdiv, helping to refine defensive structures in a physically demanding league, and at Portuguese club Boavista, focusing on youth integration and set-piece innovation.

A Poor Start

Sheffield United’s campaign has begun disastrously, going down as their worst ever start to a season in club history. After parting ways with Chris Wilder in the offseason, the Blades appointed Rubén Sellés on a three-year deal, hoping for a fresh impetus following last season’s loss in the play-offs. Yet, Sellés’ tenure imploded with five straight defeats in league openers, conceding 14 goals while scoring only twice. Defensive frailties and attacking blandness riddled the side, culminating in Sellés’s sacking last week. With the team rooted to the bottom, fans demanded urgent stabilisation, which prompted the board to reappoint Wilder.

Wilder’s Comments

On Ramos’s appointment, Wilder said:

“As I said to the media when I returned, I was keen to use the opportunity to try and freshen up the coaching side. Guilherme is someone I’ve been aware of for a while now, and he adds something a little different which will complement the talents of Alan, Matt and Micky Collins.

“He’s a young coach, but he’s built up an impressive CV working in different countries alongside some respected names in the game. I think it’s a progressive appointment for all parties and he’s someone we’re excited to be working with.”

Sheffield United’s appointment of Guilherme Ramos is a calculated move to navigate the club’s dire position in the Championship so far this season. The 40-year-old joins from Caen, where he served as assistant manager, and got a good name for stabilising their defence in a competitive campaign which saw them finish mid-table. Ramos’ experience spans Nottingham Forest’s, where he implemented high-pressing tactics and gives some experience on the second-tier. With the Blades winless in seven, conceding 18 goals, Ramos’ data-driven approach and multilingual skills could revitalise training, boost their defensive set up and spark a quick turnaround before their trip to Oxford United on Saturday.
