Sheffield United have confirmed that they have reappointed Chris Wilder as manager on a contract until the summer of 2027.
The 57-year-old ended his second stint as manager at the end of last season after failing to earn a place in the Premier League. His departure was billed as ‘mutual’, although it was clear that owners COH Sports wanted the change.
Despite their heartbreak in the play-off final against Sunderland in May, the Blades had widely impressed during one of the most unbelievable Championship seasons in recent memory. They amassed a staggering 92 points (with two deducted) but still finished 10 points adrift of promoted pair Leeds United and Burnley.
Ruben Selles was swiftly appointed as his successor, with a statement at the time saying, “The road ahead may require patience, but also promises excitement, growth, and a footballing identity that reflects both our history and our ambition.” Three months and five league games later, he was gone, having failed to pick up a single point.
COH Sports Stunning U-Turn
It was reported earlier today that Wilder returned to the club this morning to take training ahead of an official announcement. Now, just 89 days after his departure, it has been confirmed that he will return on a contract lasting until 2027. An official statement said:
“Following a difficult start to the season, the board felt it necessary to make a change in order to stabilise performances and strengthen our push for promotion. While the adoption of a different style of play was pursued with ambition, results have clearly not met expectations.

“Chris Wilder returns with proven leadership and an unparalleled understanding of Sheffield United. We are confident he is the right person to restore momentum, unite the squad and supporters, and deliver the results necessary to achieve our objectives this season.
“We would like to thank Rubén Sellés for his hard work and professionalism during his time at the club. Responsibility for recent results lies with us as owners, and we remain fully committed to supporting the team and pursuing promotion.”

COH Sports lost a lot of face when they opted to replace Chris Wilder for Ruben Selles. It was a huge gamble and one that dramatically failed. The only way this would ever have worked was for the Spaniard to hit the ground running. However, supporters were losing patience from the moment they stepped off the pitch following a 4-1 home defeat against Bristol City on the opening day. By the time the dust had settled around Friday night’s 5-0 humiliation from Ipswich Town, there was no coming back. Admitting their mistake is a brave one and one that should give the club an instant lift.
