Sheffield United could see yet another former face return in the coming days as Chris Wilder’s return is finalised.
An appalling start to the season under Ruben Selles led to the Spaniard’s sack just six games into his tenure, culminating in their 5-0 humiliation at the hands of an Ipswich Town side not yet fully up to speed. Former boss Wilder is widely expected to be reappointed for his third stint in charge at Bramall Lane, with news breaking earlier today that the 55-year-old had led today’s training session for the Blades.
Abdullah Return Possible
Now, in a new report from the Sheffield Star, Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad Al Saud could return to the red side of Sheffield just one year after his exit as the current ownership group, COH Sports, look for new faces to support them in the backroom operations. The Saudi Arabian ended his long-standing association with United in December 2024, selling to the American consortium led by businessman Steven Rosen.
It is understood that while a return for the Prince is not assured, preliminary discussions have been made on bringing the 60-year-old back into the fold in either an advisory role or even as a minority owner. Abdullah still holds stakes in the Indian side Kerala United and Belgian Pro League outfit Beerschot VA.
Joining the ownership setup at Bramall Lane in 2013, Prince Abdullah took a 50% stake in the club before a power struggle with partner Kevin McCabe which saw him take sole control by 2019.

Writers’ View
In another twist, there could be a return to Prince Abdullah at Sheffield United. It has been a shameful start for the Blades despite their pre-season expectations, with Ruben Selles’ tenure falling flat before it could even find its feet. A return to Chris Wilder will see a lot more stability on the pitch, and perhaps it will be the same should Abdullah return to the backroom at the club. His love of the Yorkshire side is well documented and brought the club back into the Premier League under his tenure, highlighted by that brilliant first season back in the top flight under Wilder. A return to their old ways could be the magic United need to return to the top flight immediately if they can correct their on-field performances. Nevertheless, this is a clear sign that current owners COH are looking for new solutions to continue to move the club upwards.
