Sheffield United have dismissed head coach Ruben Selles after the club lost all six of their opening Championship matches.
The Blades were left bottom of the table following a 5-0 defeat at Ipswich Town on Friday night, with the board opting for swift action. Selles becomes the first managerial casualty of the new season in the EFL.
Poor Results Force Change
Selles, who only arrived at Bramall Lane in the summer, has endured a disastrous start to life in South Yorkshire. The Spaniard, 42, replaced long-serving boss Chris Wilder after United’s play-off final defeat to Sunderland in May. Wilder is now the favourite for a swift return to the Blades.
His reign began with a heavy 4-1 home loss against Bristol City and was quickly followed by an early Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Birmingham City. Narrow league defeats to Swansea City, Millwall and Middlesbrough added to the pressure, but it was the thrashing at Portman Road that sealed his fate.
The Blades’ struggles in front of goal proved equally damaging. They failed to score in five consecutive league matches under Selles, raising serious concerns about the team’s attacking approach. Despite his insistence on Friday that he retained the board’s backing and would “keep working until the last minute,” the decision came less than 48 hours later.

Club Statement
A statement from United confirmed the dismissal:
“Following a review of recent performances, and taking into account the feelings of supporters, the timing of the change has been made to give the club the best possible opportunity to improve the current league position.”
Attention now turns to who will be tasked with leading the side out of the relegation zone. With United rooted to the foot of the Championship after six games, the new appointment will inherit a squad short on confidence and desperately in need of momentum.
Selles, who previously managed Hull City before taking the job at Bramall Lane, departs with the unwanted record of overseeing one of the club’s worst starts to a league campaign in recent history.
Writer’s View
The decision to part company with Selles so early highlights the precarious position Sheffield United find themselves in. Supporters have grown increasingly frustrated with a lack of direction since May’s play-off disappointment, and patience was already running thin before the Ipswich defeat.
The board have acted decisively, but the timing also leaves them with a critical task of appointing the right successor quickly. Whoever steps in must immediately address both the team’s scoring issues and a fragile confidence. Failure to do so could see United’s season spiral further out of control before it has truly begun.
