Sheffield United appear to be edging closer to the stunning reappointment of Chris Wilder as manager following the news that the two-time boss oversaw training earlier today.
The Blades took the decision to part company with Ruben Selles yesterday, just three months after the Spaniard replaced Wilder at the helm. The announcement in June came as a shock after the 57-year-old had amassed an incredible 90 points, excluding the two which were deducted at the beginning of the 2024/25 season.
Despite their remarkable tally, it was only enough for United to secure a third-placed Championship finish as both Leeds United and Burnley racked up 100 points. They breezed past Bristol City in the play-off semi final but two late goals saw them lose 2-1 to Sunderland in the final at Wembley Stadium.
Wilder Already Through The Door
Reports that the Yorkshire-based club were considering admitting their summer error emerged almost immediately after their 5-0 defeat at Ipswich Town on Friday night. Selles had taken charge of just five competitive fixtures but had failed to pick up a single point, whilst scoring just one goal in the process.
Sunday afternoon saw the news confirmed, with an official statement saying:
“Sheffield United Football Club’s board of directors have opted to make a change at managerial level.
“After a disappointing start to the EFL Championship campaign, Rubén Sellés has been relieved of his duties as manager.
“Following a review of recent performances, and taking into account the feelings of supporters, the timing of the change has been made to give the club the best possible opportunity to improve the current league position.
“The board of directors wish to thank Mr Sellés for his hard work.
“A new manager will be named in due course.”
The story developed over the weekend and it was claimed that Wilder was happy to return to the club for a third managerial stint. It now appears as if an announcement of his appointment is edging nearer after The Star claimed that the former Middlesbrough boss was at the club’s training base in Shirecliffe this morning to take on the session.
Writer’s View
This has been an incredible turn of events at Bramall Lane. The decision to sack Chris Wilder in the summer was met with major surprise and it was clear from the off that many supporters were not going to take to Ruben Selles. Their start to this season has been remarkable for all the wrong reasons. It takes a lot to admit a major error and for that, owners COH Sports should be commended. However, you have to feel that they were the only ones that didn’t see this coming.
