Wigan Athletic Boss Reveals Injury Scare Ahead Of Bolton Fixture

Wigan Athletic could have a centre-back crisis on their hands as Ryan Lowe revealed why Jason Kerr was missing from their last game.

The Latics ran riot against Doncaster Rovers over the weekend, with Dara Costelloe, Matthew Smith and Fraser Murray scoring to put their side to within reach of the playoff positions after eight games of the League One season. However, one notable absence from the squad was club captain Jason Kerr, with full-back Steven Sessegnon filling in alongside Morgan Fox and Will Aimson in the back three.

Lowe Reveals Kerr Concern

Speaking to Wigan Today following the win over Rovers, Ryan Lowe was asked why the club captain and defender was missing from the squad, having played in all but one of the Latics’ matches so far this season up to that point. The former Preston North End boss said:

“I don’t know, we’ll have to see. He’s got a bit of a knee problem, we’ll see how he is.

“He’ll probably get looked at tomorrow, but I have no real information at the moment.

“It was a late one, he was here with the lads, he’s fine, he’s walking around, so we’ll monitor that and see what comes next.”

With Kerr missing and James Carragher still missing from his injury sustained earlier in the campaign, it left Wigan with just two senior centre-backs available on Saturday, meaning Sessegnon, who had been out of favour earlier this season following his red card against Leyton Orient, was called upon to shore up the left side of the defence.

Wigan will also be without key forward Christian Saydee when they face arch-rivals Bolton Wanderers next weekend, who is still serving a three-game ban following his dismissal against Lincoln City.

This could be a costly injury for Wigan Athletic with near ever-present defender and club captain Jason Kerr now sidelined for an unknown period. He, alongside Aimson and Fox, have looked strong in front of the brilliant Sam Tickle and with two experienced options in James Carragher and Kerr injured, they are frightfully short in options for the coming weeks. Of course, Steven Sessegnon did an admirable job against Doncaster at short notice and is likely to be called upon again, but other, more makeshift options could be picked in Jensen Weir or 19-year-old Jack Rogers, who made his debut against Salford City in the EFL Trophy.
