Paul Heckingbottom says he is “delighted” to land Everton prospect Harrison Armstrong on a season-long loan and believes the midfielder will add energy and goals to Preston North End’s remodelled group.
The teenager arrives after a busy summer at Deepdale, with the head coach stressing that competition across the pitch is now in place as the Championship season beds in.
Armstrong’s profile and the plan at Deepdale
Armstrong, 18, progressed through Everton’s academy and tasted senior football during a productive loan at Derby County last spring. Preston moved before the deadline to secure him for the campaign, with Heckingbottom keen to use the youngster higher up the pitch than he was at Pride Park. The intention is to harness his pressing, late runs and penalty-area presence in a side that has recruited for variety as well as volume.
“All the business we did I was really pleased with, we worked really hard, and it was non-stop right up until getting Harrison done at the very end,” said Heckingbottom. “I think we’ve got good squad depth, we’ve got good competition and hopefully we’ll start to see that reflect in the bench and in the 16 that take the field.
“He’s young in age but he’s mature in terms of his mentality. We like Harrison and we wanted to get him, it was just a case of will Everton let him out?”
Armstrong’s pathway is clear. After making his Premier League bow for Everton in 2024, he became a regular starter in Derby’s run-in and scored his first senior goal against Plymouth Argyle. Preston view that trajectory as evidence he can influence games now, while still carrying headroom to develop.
Heckingbottom, appointed in August 2024 and now into his first full cycle of windows at Deepdale, has emphasised flexibility, with signings spanning defensive security, midfield legs and attacking options.
Armstrong’s recent international form strengthens the case. He captained England Under-18s off the bench and scored in a 3-3 draw with Spain, underlining the blend of leadership and timing that Preston hope to tap into across a congested autumn schedule.

This reads like smart, needs-led recruitment. Heckingbottom has raised the floor of the squad and added a high-ceiling midfielder whose pressing and box entries suit the Championship rhythm.
If Armstrong adapts quickly in the more advanced role envisaged, he can change the tempo of Preston’s attacks and chip in with goals, easing pressure on the front line. The move also looks low-risk, high-upside for Everton, who will measure the loan by minutes and impact. For Preston, it is the kind of marginal gain that can tilt tight games their way.
