Leyton Orient Secure Championship Talent On Permanent Deal

Dom Ballard has completed a permanent transfer from Southampton to Leyton Orient, bringing an end to his 12-year association with the Saints.

The 20-year-old striker joins Richie Wellens’ side for a six-figure fee, with Southampton retaining a significant sell-on clause.

Ballard swaps St Mary’s for Brisbane Road

Ballard, a product of the Southampton academy, leaves the club after progressing through the youth ranks and scoring heavily at under-18 and under-21 level. He netted 27 goals in 34 matches for the U18s and 33 in 38 for the U21s, helping Saints reach the Premier League 2 play-off final earlier this year.

Despite his prolific youth record, Ballard found senior opportunities limited on the south coast. He made just four first-team appearances for Saints, scoring once on his debut in a Carabao Cup tie against Cambridge United in 2022. Loan spells at Reading, Blackpool and Cambridge gave him valuable EFL experience, where he scored six goals in 45 outings across League One.

Orient, who have been among the busiest League One clubs this summer, see Ballard as a key addition in attack. He becomes their 15th summer signing and has penned a three-year contract at Brisbane Road. For manager Wellens, landing Ballard permanently is seen as a significant coup given interest from elsewhere.

Reaction from both camps

Speaking after sealing the move, Ballard said:

“I’m really happy to be joining Leyton Orient on a long-term contract. I’ve had some very positive conversations with the gaffer. He was central to me coming here. The next step in my career is a big one and I’m confident I can help the club achieve its ambitions.”

Wellens echoed that excitement, adding:

“To bring in Dom on a permanent deal is something we are really excited about. We’ve had eyes on him for a couple of seasons now. There were a lot of clubs who wanted him, so we’re over the moon that he’s chosen Orient as his next home. Dom will offer us something totally different.”

Southampton also released a statement thanking Ballard for his commitment across more than a decade at the club, wishing him well for his future career.

Writer’s View

Ballard’s move to Leyton Orient looks a smart piece of business for all parties. Southampton cash in on a talented academy product who was struggling to make the leap to their first team, while Orient secure a proven finisher at youth level with EFL experience under his belt.

For Ballard, this represents the best chance to establish himself as a senior striker, with regular game time at a progressive League One club under a manager known for developing young players. If he adapts quickly, Orient may have found a long-term goalscorer to lead their attack.
