Lincoln City head coach Michael Skubala insists selection battles are his biggest challenge ahead of this weekend’s early kick-off against Luton Town.
The Imps return to Sincil Bank on Saturday lunchtime knowing victory could briefly take them top, but their manager is focused on keeping players sharp and managing competition for places.
Squad depth giving Skubala decisions
The head coach confirmed that this week’s preparations included a behind-closed-doors friendly, designed to ensure those outside the starting XI maintain match sharpness.
It underlined the growing depth available, with Rob Street and Ryley Towler now back from injury and loan arrivals Dexter Lembikisa and Justin Obikwu pushing for involvement. Skubala admitted the intensity in training is making it increasingly difficult to settle on both his starting side and his bench.
“We just have to make sure we top players up. People won’t know that (they played behind closed doors), but it was about making sure the group that’s not playing so many minutes are ready. They’re going to be needed, whether it’s this week or next, as we get into the business of the season.
“It’s the toughest part because you have to let players down if they’re not in the team or the squad. But that’s what we want, competitive places. Training levels are fantastic at the minute.
“The bench is also a challenge, as we can only have seven. Some people will be left out, not because they’re playing badly, but tactically.”

Former Hatters in line for starts
Two players almost certain to feature against their old club are James Collins and Sonny Bradley. The latter is expected to partner Adam Jackson at the heart of defence, with Collins likely to spearhead the attack.
At left-back, Skubala must decide between Towler, who is available again, and Adam Reach, who filled in last weekend. Reeco Hackett should continue on the left side of the attack, while Street is tipped to return to the frontline after recovering from his lay-off. That would leave youngster Frankie Okoronkwo waiting for another opportunity despite impressing last weekend.

Squad strength has been a key theme of Lincoln’s start to the campaign, and this weekend will provide another test of that depth. Skubala is unlikely to take risks with fitness, but the returns of Street and Towler offer timely boosts.
The biggest calls may come at left-back and centre-forward, positions that could shape the balance of the side. Regardless of who starts, the level of competition suggests City are in a healthy place ahead of a demanding run of fixtures.
