Adilson Malanda has set his sights high after signing for Middlesbrough, insisting the move is the “right option” for his career as he looks to play in the Premier League and one day represent France.
The 23-year-old centre back is currently on loan at Charlotte FC but will arrive at the Riverside in January.
Malanda admitted there was strong interest from across Europe, including clubs such as PSV, but explained why he chose Boro as the best environment to continue his development. He revealed that conversations with Charlotte’s board and sporting director Zoran Krneta helped shape his decision, with all parties agreeing that the timing and opportunity with Middlesbrough made sense.
‘Right option’ and lofty ambitions
Speaking at a recent press conference in the United States, Malanda stressed that Middlesbrough offered the clearest and most concrete path forward for him. He also underlined his determination to help Rob Edwards’ side reach the Premier League and outlined wider personal ambitions.
“It was about finding the right option at the right time and in the right way. There were other options but Middlesbrough were the ones who were really concrete. The main thing for me was going to a league where I feel I can keep growing as a player.”
“Getting to the Premier League is the goal now. For me, there is work to do before that, but that is something that I have in my head. Hopefully we will be able to achieve it. I know what I can do, and I can see what to expect from watching games.”
Malanda added that while the step up in intensity from MLS to the Championship will be demanding, he is already studying matches to get a feel for the style of play. He acknowledged that adapting to a new environment, teammates and culture will be key, but insisted he is ready for the challenge.
The defender has also made it clear that his ambitions do not stop with Middlesbrough, highlighting his desire to break into the French national team. For now, though, his focus is on finishing the season strongly with Charlotte before reporting to Rockliffe Hall in January.

Writer’s View
Malanda’s comments underline a player with clear focus and ambition. He is not arriving on Teesside to simply add depth, but to be a cornerstone of a Middlesbrough side chasing promotion. His awareness of the Championship’s intensity and his preparation to adapt suggest a mature mindset, while his long-term aim of playing for France speaks to his confidence.
For Boro, securing a player with that drive could prove decisive in their push for a Premier League return.
