Blackpool Confirm Player Exit Just a Month After Joining The Club

Blackpool have confirmed the departure of winger Malcolm Ebiowei less than a month after he joined from Crystal Palace.

The 22-year-old, who signed a two-year deal earlier this summer, has left Bloomfield Road by mutual consent due to a personal matter, ending his brief stay with the Seasiders.

Short Stay Comes to an End

Ebiowei’s arrival from Selhurst Park was seen as an exciting move, following an early breakthrough at Derby County in 2022. However, things failed to materialise on the Fylde coast, with the winger limited to three appearances off the bench for Steve Bruce’s side. His final outing came as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat at Plymouth Argyle, while an injury ruled him out of the 1-1 draw against Bolton Wanderers.

In announcing his departure, Blackpool stressed that the decision was amicable and centred on circumstances away from football. It marks another frustrating chapter in a career that has yet to take off since his Derby breakthrough. After joining Crystal Palace, Ebiowei managed only five senior games, with loan spells at Hull City, RWDM Brussels and Oxford United failing to deliver regular minutes.

The Seasiders appeared prepared for this scenario, securing wingers Scott Banks and Josh Bowler on deadline day to bolster their wide options. Both players add competition in the final third, easing the impact of Ebiowei’s swift exit.

From Derby Promise to Palace Struggles

Ebiowei was once regarded as a rising talent after his energetic displays in the Championship with Derby, where he made 16 appearances in 2022. That form earned him his Premier League move, but consistent opportunities proved elusive. His spells away from Palace did not provide the platform expected, and his move to Blackpool was viewed as a chance to reignite his career in League One.

Instead, his stay has ended almost as quickly as it began, underlining the difficulties players can face in finding the right environment to fulfil their potential. For Blackpool, the episode closes swiftly, with Bruce focusing on integrating his new recruits as the team look to mount a push towards the top of the table.

Writer’s View

Ebiowei’s departure is an unfortunate turn for both player and club. While Blackpool acted decisively to protect their squad depth with late additions, the winger’s early exit highlights how unpredictable transfers can be. At just 22, there is still time for him to find stability and recapture the promise shown at Derby.

For the Seasiders, the focus now shifts to Banks and Bowler providing the consistency and quality out wide that Ebiowei was expected to bring. If they can settle quickly, this disruption may ultimately have little impact on Blackpool’s ambitions.
