Cambridge United are finally finding their feet in League Two, following a gutting relegation from the third tier. The U’s have won two of their last three league matches, with a cup-run being strung together after victories over Bristol Rovers and Championship Charlton Athletic.
Neil Harris’ side will be visited by an Oldham Athletic side looking to stake their claim in the fourth tier after a successful play-off campaign in the National League. With just four points and an early 19th-placed spot, Oldham need a resilient performance against Cambridge.

First Prediction for Cambridge United vs Oldham Athletic – James Brophy to score anytime 67/20
Cambridge have had a clinical goalscorer in their ranks for their last few games of 2025/26. James Brophy, who dons the number seven shirt for Harris’ side, bagged against Colchester United in a 2-1 victory. After failing to repeat this form in a second half cameo against Bristol Rovers, Brophy proved his necessity in the starting lineup by scoring an opening, 15th-minute goal against Charlton to spearhead a 3-1 second round victory in the EFL Cup.
In their most recent 2-0 win over Newport County, Brophy also bagged a late 75th-minute goal to double United’s lead and could go three games on the bounce with goals in league fixtures. The 31-year-old will be coming up against an Oldham side who have been increasingly questionable at the back. Despite heavy rotation, the Athletic side in a Vertu Trophy game against Manchester City Academy conceded five goals in midweek.
Second Prediction for Cambridge United vs Oldham Athletic – Cambridge United to win / Over 1.5 goals 8/5
Cambridge are the clear favourites to win this tie. Oldham have failed to win so far this season, across all competitions. Back-to-back losses for Micky Mellon’s side could culminate in a heavy defeat to Harris’ team this time around. As a recently-relegated outfit, Cambridge’s remaining League One quality could continue their rejuvenated momentum to mount a decent charge towards the play-off places.
In the past five games, despite poor performances from Oldham, this bet has landed three times across the domestic competitions. A tie against Manchester City Academy obliterated this goal tally, while Cambridge have been consistently landing this bet during League Two fixtures. 2-0 vs Newport and 2-1 against Colchester came either side of a 3-1 Charlton win in the EFL Cup as well as a loss to Bristol Rovers. This defeat to the Gas was the first time since an opening weekend victory over Cheltenham Town resulted in a 1-0 showing and a losing bet in terms of goalscoring.
Third Prediction for Cambridge United vs Oldham Athletic – Oldham Athletic to score – No 5/4
Oldham have struggled in front of goal so far this campaign, failing to score on three occasions. Given United’s superior back line, the expecting is on Harris’ side to shut out a visiting Athletic team – given their home fortunes this season.
In Mellon’s side’s recent loss to Gillingham, Oldham were potentially unlucky not to score as the arguably better team in the tie. However, Oldham were toothless for the most part and only created two big chances, which weren’t taken clinically. Athletic were evidently damaged by the heavy defeat in the EFL Trophy and will face a side this weekend who are positive off the back of a 2-0 shutout against Newport.
Against title favourites, Milton Keynes Dons and newly-relegated side, Bristol Rovers, Oldham failed to score in both. With Cambridge being the same as the latter, Harris’ tactical quality could shut Athletic out entirely.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-to-Head
Harris’ team began their League Two return with a 1-0 victory over Cheltenham. A visit to Swindon Town the following weekend left fans disappointed in an action-packed game where both sides could have won. This 3-2 showing saw the U’s pitted against a promotion hopeful and a great Ian Holloway outfit.
In terms of league results since, a 1-1 draw with Harrogate Town is their only one-pointer, with two fourth-tier wins coming against Colchester and Newport – either side of the Gas’ revenge for a Carabao Cup knockout. An EFL Cup campaign has so far brought two wins against decent opposition. A steady 2-0 victory over Bristol Rovers put them through to a Championship visit from Charlton. Harris’ side caused a 3-1 upset and look to be gaining tremendous momentum.
Oldham have failed to win this campaign, with a dismal 3-1 knockout to Accrington Stanley in the EFL Cup first round. Draws against MK Dons, Colchester, Bristol Rovers and Fleetwood are Mellon’s side’s only points in League Two. The returning EFL side have lost twice in the league – to Swindon and Gillingham. A 5-1 battering from Manchester City Academy began Athletic’s EFL Trophy campaign on 26th August.
Head-to-head records are few and far between. The latest fixture in March 2021 saw Cambridge visit Oldham and win 4-2. Back to back 2-1 victories for Athletic in this tie, came in the 2019/20 League Two season.
