Hull City have rejected a £10m offer from Championship rivals Coventry City for defender Charlie Hughes.
The Tigers are determined to keep the 21-year-old at the MKM Stadium despite repeated approaches in the final days of the transfer window.
Hull Stand Firm on Defensive Star
Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, have already seen offers of £4m and £7m dismissed, with their latest big-money attempt also rebuffed. Hughes, who joined from Wigan Athletic’s academy, is considered a cornerstone of Sergej Jakirovic’s plans and is not agitating for a move away.
Owner Acun Ilicali believes the centre-back’s value could climb to as much as £20m by next summer if he continues his upward trajectory. Head coach Jakirovic has previously indicated that Hughes’s next step should be directly into the Premier League, underlining Hull’s belief that he should not depart for another second-tier club.
Hull’s position is complicated by ongoing financial restrictions. The club were handed a three-window transfer ban by the EFL earlier this year, later reduced to two on appeal, limiting their ability to recruit. With no option to spend fees on players or loans, retaining key personnel has become a priority for the Tigers as they push towards the top end of the Championship table.
Hughes missed last weekend’s defeat to Blackburn Rovers due to an illness that swept through the squad, but is available again for this Saturday’s trip to Bristol City. His presence will be a significant boost for Jakirovic as Hull attempt to steady their form following a mixed start to the campaign.
Coventry, who drew 0-0 with Hull on the opening day of the season, are understood to remain keen. Lampard is eager to strengthen his defensive line as part of a promotion push, but the Sky Blues may be forced to look elsewhere before Monday’s 7pm deadline given Hull’s resolve.

Writer’s View
Turning down £10m for a 21-year-old centre-back shows just how highly Hull rate Hughes. In an era when Championship clubs often cash in, Ilicali’s stance reflects a growing ambition to build around homegrown talent rather than sell to rivals. With Hughes content to remain in East Yorkshire and Jakirovic convinced he can eventually step into the Premier League, it appears unlikely Hull will budge.
Coventry’s pursuit underlines his reputation, but unless they return with an astronomical bid, this looks a battle the Tigers are determined to win.
