Sheffield United are weighing up a move for Cardiff City prospect Cian Ashford as Ruben Selles looks to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes.
The 20-year-old forward has already caught the Blades’ attention with his early-season form and is being linked with a late push to Bramall Lane. The most recent development has seen Selles admit the player will be ‘on the list’ of many clubs.
Cardiff’s Rising Talent
Ashford, described as one of Cardiff’s brightest prospects, has made an impressive start in League One after his side’s relegation from the Championship last term. He famously scored the winner at Bramall Lane in the FA Cup last season, a moment that underlined his potential against top-level opposition.
The youngster has been tipped as “the future” of Cardiff, but interest from higher-placed clubs comes as little surprise given his technical ability and eye for goal. Sheffield United’s pursuit is thought to be driven by a desire to add creativity and depth in the wide areas, an area Selles has highlighted as a priority.

Selles’ Response
Speaking ahead of this weekend’s clash with Middlesbrough, where he will still be chasing his first win as Blades boss, Selles said:
“Well, as much as I know, he is a Cardiff player. He was a talented young player last season and he did well, besides the end of the season for them. And yeah, I think he will be on the list for many clubs in the Championship.”
The Spaniard’s guarded comments suggest that while United admire Ashford, negotiations are still at an early stage. His words also acknowledge the wider interest the player is attracting across the Championship.
Transfer Push at Bramall Lane
United have been busy in recent days, completing the signing of Japhet Tanganga from Millwall following Ben Godfrey and Nils Zatterstrom’s arrivals earlier in the month. They have also been linked with Tahith Chong, now at Luton Town after their relegation from the Premier League.
Selles believes the recruitment drive can inspire his existing squad, pointing out that the arrival of experienced players provides younger members of the group with strong role models and greater belief. With the transfer window closing on Monday, there is little doubt United will remain active right up until the deadline.
Writer’s View
Sheffield United’s interest in Ashford shows a clear attempt to balance immediate reinforcement with long-term planning. Ashford has already proven himself against the Blades and looks more than capable of stepping up again, but whether Cardiff will sanction a move for one of their top assets is another matter entirely.
With Tanganga, Godfrey and Zatterstrom already through the door, United’s final additions could prove crucial in shaping Selles’ early tenure.
