Everton welcome the first EFL side to their brand new Hill Dickinson Stadium in the EFL Cup second round as Mansfield Town head to Merseyside.
Our Three Predictions For Everton FC vs Mansfield Town
- Prediction 1 – Dwight McNeil To Score – 19/10
- Prediction 2 – Over 2.5 Goals Scored – 8/13
- Prediction 3 – Everton FC To Win – 2/9
First Prediction For Everton FC vs Mansfield Town – Dwight McNeil To Score – 19/10
With Iliman Ndiaye and Jack Grealish lighting up the Toffees’ opening two games, the rest of the wingers at the club will have no better chance to play than in this game. That includes Dwight McNeil, who entered the game against Brighton and Hove Albion late on as a replacement for Ndiaye, who was substituted earlier. The former Burnley man was one of Everton’s bright spots last season as they began to find their feet under David Moyes and is likely to come in as a replacement against weaker opposition. McNeil scored at this stage of the competition last season against Doncaster Rovers, and also assisted against his former club the previous campaign in the competition.
Second Prediction For Everton FC vs Mansfield Town – Over 2.5 Goals Scored – 8/13
Everton have a lot of momentum behind them with the atmosphere at the club arguably at its best since Moyes’ last stint at the club over a decade ago. The move to the new stadium has already borne fruit with a win against Brighton, and they will hope for a big cup run in either the EFL or FA Cups, and now is a good chance to get them on that path in the former. With Beto and new summer signing Thierry Barry still yet to score this season, both will be eager to prove themselves and have a good chance against lower league opposition. Of course, Mansfield could nick a goal or two with a weakened squad from their opponents, especially with Nigel Clough’s side averaging two goals per game in League One. Both sides could get on the sheet and ultimately could see a higher scoring game.
Third Prediction For Everton FC vs Mansfield Town – Everton FC To Win – 2/9
In a contest between a Premier League side and lower league opposition, it is fairly straightforward to back the top-flight team. Everton have a massive positive momentum behind them right now and with strong reinforcement combined with no high-profile sales, the Toffees have a very strong depth for this fixture that could see them through this game without playing their stronger assets. Everton have been eliminated from the second round of the League cup just once this century, against Crystal Palace in 2001, and despite the potential for a cup upset, it is unlikely. Mansfield have advanced from this stage of the competition just twice since their EFL return.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head
Everton have had an average start to their season after just two Premier League games, with it getting off to a bad start to Leeds United on the opening Monday night fixture of the season, losing 1-0 to a late Lukas Nmecha penalty in a game the Yorkshire side looked firmly on top. However, they redeemed themselves as they officially opened the Hill Dickinson stadium against Brighton and Hove Albion with summer signing Jack Grealish being the standout star with two assists. David Moyes’ side have been active in the market and have made seven senior signings so far this window to overhaul the squad from last season. Many of these players could be in line for their debuts for the club, including backup goalkeeper Mark Travers and Adam Aznou. This Mansfield test could also see the Toffees debut of Tyler Dibling, who officially signed for the club yesterday from Southampton for a reported £42 million. Their next and final game before the international break following this clash sees them face Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Mansfield Town have had a very positive beginning to their second season in League One, with goals coming in bundles so far this campaign. They are currently the joint top scorers in the third tier with ten goals, level with title favourites Huddersfield Town. The 16 goals they have seen so far across their matches is only beaten by Blackpool, who have two more. Those two faced off seven days ago, with Town winning 2-0 before achieving their best result yet with a 4-1 victory at home to Leyton Orient, putting them into ninth as the league takes a brief rest. The Stags advanced to this stage with a comfortable 2-0 win over arch-rivals Chesterfield, with Rhys Oates and Will Evans finding the net. The former, however, is a doubt for this contest, getting injured in the first half against the Spireites and has not been seen in a squad since. Their weekend fixture sees them head east to Lincoln City.
Mansfield are set to play their first ever game against Everton in this match, having been unfortunate to never play at their historic Goodison Park ground.
Thomas Bramall will referee this fixture, which will be his second appointment of the season. His only other game was a Premier League clash, officiating Bournemouth’s win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. He dished out six yellow cards and a straight red card to Wolves’ Willy Boly.
