‘We Were The Better Team’ – Opposition Striker Plays Down Huddersfield Town Threat

Billy Sharp has urged Doncaster Rovers to be more clinical after their 2-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town ended a long unbeaten run.

The 39-year-old striker, making his 700th career appearance, admitted the League One side played well but lacked the killer instinct to turn dominance into victory.

Rovers Fall Short Against Terriers

Sharp went close twice on Tuesday night but was denied by strong defending as Rovers failed to convert chances in a first half they largely controlled. Huddersfield struck late through substitute Joe Taylor, who won and converted a penalty six minutes from time, leaving Grant McCann’s side frustrated.

The result was Rovers’ first defeat since early March, ending a 16-match unbeaten streak. Despite that setback, Sharp was keen to highlight the positives from a performance he felt merited more.

“We played really well, but just didn’t have that killer instinct in the final third. The positive thing is we came here against a side tipped to get promoted and spent a lot of money and I thought we were the better team. Sometimes, in football, the better team doesn’t win,” Sharp said.

McCann shared his striker’s frustration, branding the penalty “ridiculous” and expressing annoyance at what he viewed as gamesmanship from Town goalkeeper Owen Goodman. Yet he praised his team’s first-half display as “outstanding” and insisted it offered encouragement moving forward.

Encouragement Despite Defeat

Rovers have made a strong start to life back in League One, showing ambition in their play under McCann. Four goals in four league games points to the need for greater sharpness in front of goal, but their expansive approach has already troubled established sides at this level.

Sharp emphasised that Rovers would not abandon their attacking style. “The manager is positive thinking and very brave and wants to come and win every game,” he said. “That’s how we got promotion and that’s how he wants us to continue.”

With an experienced striker still proving influential and a squad built on confidence from last season’s success, Doncaster appear well placed to compete strongly once they find a more ruthless edge in the final third.

Writer’s View

This was a reminder of both the strengths and weaknesses in Doncaster’s game. McCann’s side are brave on the ball, energetic, and capable of outplaying promotion contenders, but a lack of composure in front of goal cost them against Huddersfield. Sharp remains a talisman, but at 39, he cannot shoulder the scoring burden alone.

If Rovers can spread goals throughout the team while maintaining their positive approach, they will be more than capable of pushing towards the upper end of the table despite this early-season setback.
