Reading have announced the signing of two-time promotion winner Jack Marriott from Championship outfit Wrexham on a three-year deal.
The 30-year-old had been expected to depart the STōK Cae Ras before the end of the transfer window having fallen out of favour since the turn of the year. He signed for the Red Dragons in February 2024, helping the club earn promotion from League Two.
He began the 2024/25 campaign as Phil Parkinson’s preferred attacker, scoring five times in the opening games of the season. However, a broken fibula ruled him out until the New Year, where he found himself having to compete with new signings Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez. As a result, he only played a bit part role as Wrexham clinched promotion to the Championship.
Reading Swoop To Seal Marriott’s Signature
News of Reading’s interest in the former Peterborough United striker emerged last week. The Royals have endured a poor start to the new season and currently sit 23rd in League One.
They lost their first three games against Lincoln City, Huddersfield Town and AFC Wimbledon, but have since picked up back-to-back draws against Bolton Wanderers and Wycombe Wanderers. This saw Noel Hunt keen to strengthen his attacking line, with the manager revealing his delight upon the announcement. Speaking to official club media, he said:
“Jack is a fantastic addition to our group. He knows this division inside out, he’s got a real eye for goal, and he brings experience that will really help our younger players as well. Having been part of a promotion-winning side last season, he also knows what it takes to succeed. We’re excited to get him into the squad and I’m sure our fans will enjoy watching him in a Reading shirt.”
Reading will be looking to avenge their defeat against Wimbledon from earlier in the month when they host their division rivals in the Carabao Cup second round later tonight. Marriott is ineligible to play having participated in the first round for Wrexham in what was his only appearance this season.

This is an excellent signing for Reading and one that could give the squad a real boost. There’s no getting away from the fact that their start to the season has been hugely disappointing, even though there have been glimpses of a revival in the last three games. Marriott’s arrival now gives them a legitimate goal threat and one that is proven at this level.
