Mansfield Town On The Rise As Seasiders Sunk

Jamie McDonnell struck twice as Mansfield Town secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Blackpool at the One Call Stadium.

The midfielder’s quickfire brace early in the second half sealed three points and delivered the Stags their first home win of the new League One campaign.

McDonnell Makes the Difference

Nigel Clough’s side had already built momentum with away victories against Chesterfield and Exeter City, and they carried that confidence into a controlled display on Tuesday evening. The newly renovated Bishop Street Stand welcomed home fans for the first time, adding to the sense of occasion.

Mansfield’s intent was clear from the outset, with Regan Hendry testing Bailey Peacock-Farrell after just five minutes and Will Evans narrowly firing over shortly afterwards. Louis Reed also went close from distance, while Blackpool’s only notable first-half chance came when CJ Hamilton headed over from Tom Bloxham’s cross.

The Stags were presented with a golden opportunity to break the deadlock just before the interval. Evans saw his strike blocked by the arm of Lee Evans, only to miss from the spot as Peacock-Farrell dived low to his right to save.

Set-Piece Superiority

Parity lasted only two minutes after the restart. Hendry delivered a dangerous corner and McDonnell rose highest at the back post, planting a firm header into the far corner. The Northern Ireland international doubled the lead eight minutes later, reacting sharply when another Hendry delivery broke loose inside the box to fire home.

The double strike marked McDonnell’s first goals for the club following his summer arrival, and they underlined Mansfield’s growing threat from set pieces. Clough’s men continued to dictate the tempo, with debutant Max Dickov denied a debut goal by Peacock-Farrell midway through the second half.

Blackpool, managed by Steve Evans, rarely threatened to mount a comeback. Their first effort on target arrived in stoppage time, when Liam Roberts collected Jordan Brown’s header with ease to ensure a comfortable clean sheet.

Writer’s View

Mansfield produced the sort of complete performance that will encourage supporters to believe this season could deliver something special. McDonnell’s brace provided the decisive cutting edge, but the platform was built on strong defensive organisation and confident midfield play.

The controlled nature of the win, coupled with the boost of a newly opened stand, has created momentum at an important stage of the campaign. If the Stags continue to combine set-piece strength with defensive solidity, they could establish themselves among the division’s most consistent sides.
