Blackburn Rovers Plotting Bundesliga Raid

Blackburn Rovers are stepping up their transfer push with a late move for St. Pauli winger Dapo Afolayan.

The Championship club have made contact over a potential £2m deal, as manager Valerien Ismael looks to strengthen his squad before the window closes.

Ismael Eyes Attacking Reinforcement

Afolayan, 27, is a familiar name to English fans, having previously represented West Ham United, Oldham Athletic, Mansfield Town and Bolton Wanderers before making the switch to Germany in January 2023. He has become a regular starter for St. Pauli, but sources suggest the Bundesliga side would be prepared to do business if the price is right.

Reports indicate Blackburn’s interest has been active for several weeks, with contact made to explore the player’s availability. However, much will depend on whether Afolayan himself is convinced to return to English football at this stage of his career.

The London-born forward enjoyed a standout spell at Bolton, where his flair and direct running made him a key figure in their rise from League Two to League One contention. A move to Germany followed, where he helped St. Pauli compete at the top end of the second tier before their elevation to the Bundesliga. His versatility across the front line would address a major gap in Ismael’s squad, which has been hit by a series of high-profile departures this summer.

Blackburn’s Summer Challenge

Rovers have already lost Callum Brittain, Andi Weimann, Danny Batth and Tyrhys Dolan during the current window, with long-serving midfielder Lewis Travis also expected to finalise a move to Derby County. That exodus has left Ismael with a weakened group, despite a morale-boosting win away at Hull City last weekend.

With the transfer deadline looming, Blackburn are believed to be targeting at least three reinforcements, including a central defender, a midfielder and attacking depth. Afolayan is viewed as a player capable of lifting the attacking threat on the wings, while a proven striker remains on the wishlist.

Writer’s View

Blackburn’s pursuit of Afolayan underlines both their ambition and the scale of the rebuild required at Ewood Park. Losing so many senior players in one summer has stretched Ismael’s options, and while the capture of a proven creative outlet would be a statement of intent, it also represents a gamble given the player’s current status in the Bundesliga.

If Rovers can pull it off, they will add flair and directness that could be vital in reigniting a play-off push, but convincing Afolayan to swap top-flight German football for the Championship remains the decisive hurdle.
