Peterborough United are preparing a fresh approach for Cheltenham Town winger Ethon Archer as they attempt to revive their faltering start to the season.
The Posh have lost all three league fixtures so far and exited the Carabao Cup to Accrington Stanley, leaving manager Darren Ferguson under pressure to add quality before the transfer window closes.

Archer Still in Demand
Archer, 22, is understood to remain a prime target after earlier bids were rejected by Cheltenham. Stevenage also expressed interest earlier in the summer, but Peterborough are expected to return with an improved offer in the coming days.
The winger has been an ever-present for the Robins this season, starting every league fixture, and last term he contributed seven goals and six assists in League Two. That productivity has attracted attention despite Cheltenham’s struggles, with the Gloucestershire side bottom of the table following a 5-0 defeat at MK Dons.

Peterborough’s Recruitment Drive
Ferguson has already overseen the arrivals of midfielder Matthew Garbett, defender Tom Lees, and several younger prospects including Brandon Khela, David Okagbue and Vicente Reyes. However, the departures of Kwame Poku to QPR and Ricky-Jade Jones to St Pauli, alongside other senior exits, have left significant gaps in attacking areas.
Currently, Abraham Odoh has been preferred on the left flank, with Cian Hayes and Kyrell Lisbie providing further depth. The sale of Chris Conn-Clarke has reduced options through the middle, making Archer a potential solution both out wide and centrally.
Cheltenham Face a Test of Resolve
For Cheltenham, holding onto one of their few consistent performers will be a challenge as the transfer deadline looms. Archer’s influence on the pitch is clear, but the financial pull of a sizeable offer from a promotion-chasing League One side could be difficult to resist.
The Robins’ new boss will be desperate to avoid losing a key player while trying to reverse a poor start, though the club’s position at the foot of the table may strengthen Archer’s desire for a move.
Writer’s View
Peterborough’s intent to return for Archer highlights both their ambition and their need. The squad has been reshaped heavily this summer, but the balance is yet to settle, with creativity and penetration still missing in the final third. Archer’s versatility makes him an appealing option, and his record suggests he could adapt quickly to League One.
For Cheltenham, the prospect of losing a talisman before the deadline would be a serious blow, yet their early form may make resistance difficult. Much will depend on how determined Peterborough’s hierarchy are to back Ferguson as he seeks a way out of a poor opening month.
