Queens Park Rangers Frustration As €450,000 Move Collapses

Queens Park Rangers have abandoned their pursuit of Schalke forward Pape Meïssa Ba despite the player being in London and eager to complete a move.

The collapsed deal has left the 28-year-old striker in limbo after what has been described in Germany as a “crazy situation”.

QPR had initially agreed a fee of around €450,000 with Schalke, only for the deal to stall over reported visa complications. Those issues were believed to have been resolved, with Ba even undergoing a medical.

He is understood to have partially passed follow-up examinations after failing the initial tests.

From Fee Agreement to Total Breakdown

Talks progressed to the point where the west London club renegotiated terms, with Schalke prepared to let the Senegalese leave on a free transfer in order to save on wages. However, fresh concerns over the forward’s fitness led Julien Stéphan’s side to pull the plug entirely, despite claims from German journalists Patrick Berger and Christopher Michel that Ba has no history of injuries.

It is believed QPR’s hesitation stems from fears over the risk of potential future setbacks rather than any current medical condition. This caution has resulted in the deal being abandoned, leaving the striker stranded in London with no immediate prospect of joining another side in England.

Ba’s track record suggests a player capable of delivering goals, particularly in France’s Championnat National where he netted 21 times for Red Star in the 2021–22 season. He followed that with 23 goals in 87 Ligue 2 appearances for Grenoble before moving to Schalke in January 2025.

His time in Germany has been more modest, with two goals in 13 appearances, but he remains a proven scorer at the second-tier level. However, former Plymouth boss Milon Muslic is reported not to like the striker, shifting him to the reserves.

For QPR, the collapse of the move leaves them still searching for attacking reinforcements before the window closes. The R’s have been keen to add depth in forward areas and Ba’s arrival was seen as a relatively low-risk option given the free transfer agreement. Instead, the club must now either turn to other targets or head into the autumn relying on their current frontline.

From the player’s perspective, the outcome is deeply frustrating. Having travelled, passed most of his medical, and agreed personal terms, Ba has effectively lost valuable weeks in pre-season preparations. With the Championship already underway, any future suitor would need to integrate him quickly to get the best out of his abilities.

Writer’s View

This feels like a case where QPR’s risk-aversion may cost them a potentially useful addition. While the medical flag clearly concerned the club, the fact that Ba has no documented injury history suggests it was more about perceived durability than actual fitness.

In a competitive market, passing up on a free transfer for a player with proven scoring ability in France could be a gamble of its own. For now, QPR’s attacking options remain unchanged and the search for reinforcements continues with the clock ticking down on the transfer window.
