Another update has been given in the ongoing crisis at Sheffield Wednesday, with reports suggesting another delayed wage payment is on the cards.
The Owls have been mired in trouble throughout the summer with no solution in sight as chairman Dejphon Chansiri continues to make no progress in selling the club. This week has seen the situation spiral further, with manager Danny Rohl finally announcing his exit and the North Stand at Hillsborough being shut for the foreseeable future due to safety concerns.
Fourth Delay Expected
According to Any Giddings of BBC Radio Sheffield, July’s wage payments are on course to be delayed once more, making it the fourth time this has occurred in 2025 and the third month in a row that staff will go without their earnings. Because of their previous infringements, the club are under multiple embargoes banning them from signing any players outside of the free agent market, and with less than two weeks to go until their Championship bow against Leicester City, there is no manager and not enough senior professional players in place in South Yorkshire.
In his post, Giddings states that “there is a possibility they could refuse to play as a consequence”, meaning that fixtures, such as their opening game against The Foxes on August 10th could face disruption. 22 players featured for the club in a pre-season triple header against Mansfield Town, including Ike Ugbo and Jamal Lowe, whilst Callum Paterson and Barry Bannan remained uninvolved due to being out of contract.
Their manager’s problem looks close to being resolved with reports from the Sheffield Star on Monday stating that Henrik Pedersen would be taking over the role weeks after extending his contract as an assistant to the outgoing Rohl.

Writers’ View
Once again, this is nothing short of a disgrace of what is being done to one of the oldest institutions in world football. Dejphon Chansiri’s blasé attitude is costing the club dearly and once again has seen very unnecessary departures with Josh Windass, Michael Smith and now Danny Rohl all calling it quits in recent weeks. The sooner the chairman leaves Sheffield behind, there is no doubt this great club will rise once more, but the damage done has set this side back years, through no fault of anyone else but Chansiri. The sooner an Independent Regulator is established, the better for the game, as it will finally put an end to the chaos seen up and down the country at places like Morecambe, Sheffield Wednesday and up until recently Reading.
