Sheffield Wednesday Crisis Deepens: Danny Rohl Leaves

Sheffield Wednesday have officially parted ways with manager Danny Röhl, ending months of uncertainty over his future.

The 36-year-old German departs by mutual consent, bringing his impressive tenure at Hillsborough to a close just 12 days before the start of the new Championship season.

Exit Confirmed Following Morning Meeting at Middlewood Road

Röhl joined Wednesday in October 2023 and oversaw a remarkable turnaround, lifting the club from relegation danger to survival in his debut campaign. He followed that up by securing a comfortable mid-table finish in 2024–25. However, tension behind the scenes has overshadowed pre-season preparations, with Röhl reportedly informing the club of his desire to leave as early as April.

This morning, Röhl addressed players and staff at the club’s Middlewood Road training ground in a short farewell meeting. The Sheffield Star reports that clear-the-air talks had taken place earlier in the summer, and while training had resumed with Röhl at the helm, the relationship between the manager and owner Dejphon Chansiri is understood to have remained strained.

Pedersen Poised to Take Over Ahead of Leicester Opener

Röhl’s departure ends a drawn-out saga that had seen him linked with several other roles, including an approach from then-Premier League side Southampton last December. More recently, speculation around his contract status has continued to swirl, with assistant Henrik Pedersen reportedly lined up as his successor.

Pedersen recently signed a new contract and is widely expected to take charge for the opening fixture away at Leicester City. Sascha Lense, Chris Powell, Neil Thompson and Sal Bibbo have also left the club as part of Röhl’s departure.

Despite a rocky end, Röhl’s impact at Hillsborough is unlikely to be forgotten. His bold tactical approach, commitment to youth development, and the galvanising of a squad previously struggling for form brought him swift admiration from supporters.

“Sheffield Wednesday would like to thank Danny and his backroom team for their services and wish them well for the future,” read the club’s official statement.

Writer’s View

Danny Röhl’s departure is a major blow for Sheffield Wednesday just days before the season starts. After engineering one of the most impressive turnarounds in recent Championship memory, this messy end feels both frustrating and unnecessary.

Röhl clearly had a vision for the club, but his exit underscores the deep-rooted structural issues that continue to plague Wednesday. His decision to leave, months in the making, highlights just how strained things had become behind the scenes. For supporters, the timing couldn’t be worse.

Henrik Pedersen may provide short-term continuity, but the shadow of Chansiri’s decision-making will continue to loom large unless trust and direction are urgently restored. For now, Wednesday are once again a club on the brink of transition, just when stability seemed within reach.
