Birmingham City have found a new attacking target just 24 hours removed from their sale of Alfie May.
Being sold to Huddersfield Town for a fee believed to be in the region of £1.2 million, the Blues cashed in on their striker just 12 months on from signing him from Charlton Athletic. Despite being only three goals behind eventual top scorer Jay Stansfield, Chris Davies’ side have opted to move on from the 32-year-old and have already identified a possible replacement.
Bundesliga Player Targeted
According to reports in Football League World, Birmingham have turned their attention to Werder Bremen’s Marvin Ducksch, and are closing in on an agreement with the German side for his signature. Aged 31, the forward played in 32 of the Die Grün-Weißen’s league games last season, scoring eight times and providing as many assists.
Reports from Germany earlier this week linked Ducksch to a potential move to the West Midlands, but City faced potential competition from Greek Super League side PAOK. With 12 months remaining on his contract, Bremen have been looking at moving on the striker who has played for the club for four seasons and scored over 50 times since arriving from Hannover 96.
Birmingham have already spent heavily in the position this window, securing former Celtic star Kyogo Furuhashi from Rennes for an undisclosed fee, which L’Equipe suggested could reach up to £10.3 million should clauses be met. Demerai Gray has also returned to St. Andrews’, softening the blow felt by the failure to capture Peterborough United‘s Kwame Poku earlier in the window.

Writers’ View
It seems that Birmingham City have identified a great replacement for Alfie May in Marvin Ducksch. Fitting a similar age profile, the German has been a top contributor in both goals and assists, as May was last season, which saw the former Charlton man end as the club’s top combined goal contributor in League One. However, there will be concern over the calf injury he has sustained this pre-season, which will likely disrupt his chances of making the first matchday squad this season. Of course, there is very stiff competition for a starting place with Jay Stansfield and Kyogo Furuhashi both likely starters, so whether regular game time is on the cards for Ducksch is up for debate.
