West Bromwich Albion Dealt Blow In Transfer Pursuit

West Bromwich Albion have been dealt a setback in their pursuit of South Korean winger Jeon Jin-woo, with reports confirming the player has opted to remain in the K League.

The 25-year-old, who plays for Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, has rejected approaches from both Albion and Belgian side Genk following talks with his current club and manager Gus Poyet.

West Brom Miss Out as Jeon Commits to Jeonbuk

Albion had been keeping tabs on Jeon after an outstanding season in South Korea, where he leads the K League scoring charts with 12 goals and 14 in all competitions. However, despite early interest, the club did not submit an official bid. Any hopes of luring him to The Hawthorns have now ended after the winger confirmed he will stay with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors for the remainder of the season.

According to reports from South Korea, Jeon held discussions with the Jeonbuk board and manager Gus Poyet, who personally persuaded him to shelve his European ambitions for now. The club’s position in a tight title race and the looming closure of the K League transfer window contributed to their reluctance to part ways with one of their star players.

The decision will disappoint West Brom fans, who had hoped the club’s fresh attacking blueprint under Ryan Mason would be bolstered by a player with international pedigree and proven goal-scoring ability.

Jeon’s Revival After Injury and Military Setback

Jeon’s career resurgence has been one of the stories of the 2025 K League season. After beginning his career at Suwon Samsung Bluewings, he was sidelined by a long-term injury following a car accident during his mandatory military service with Gimcheon Sangmu. His development stalled, and Suwon were relegated from the K League 1 in 2023.

However, a move to Jeonbuk in July 2024 reignited his form. Since then, he has scored 14 goals in 32 appearances and earned a recall to the South Korea national team, making his senior debut earlier this year.

The winger is now considered one of the top talents in South Korea. His decision to remain in the K League is a testament to Jeonbuk’s growing stature and the influence of Poyet, who has led the side to a 10-point lead at the top of the table.

Writer’s View

West Brom’s interest in Jeon Jin-woo was a smart move. A high-output winger in his prime, with international experience and explosive pace, Jeon would have added goals and flair to an attack that struggled for consistency last season. His connection to Son Heung-min, reportedly a factor in the Baggies’ scouting process, only added intrigue.

Ultimately, Jeon’s choice to stay in South Korea reflects both his personal loyalty to Jeonbuk and the club’s refusal to sell mid-season. For Albion, it is back to the drawing board. With just weeks remaining in the window and Mason’s rebuild gaining momentum, the club will need to move quickly if they are to find an alternative of equal impact.
