Swansea City Fail In Defender Pursuit

Swansea City are expected to walk away from a deal to sign Brazilian defender David Sousa after their bid was rejected.

With fresh investment in the form of Luka Modric and a new manager in Alan Sheehan after he was handed the role permanently, things are looking up for the black and white half of South Wales. The Jacks have made four signings so far, with striker Bobby Wales, winger Zeidane Inoussa and centre-backs Ricardo Santos and Cameron Burgess from Ipswich Town all arriving.

Swansea Move On From Deal

However, it seemed that City’s business was not done in the defensive market, as the Athletic have revealed that they have had a bid rejected for Molenbeek defender David Sousa after offering a fee of £858,000 to the Belgian side. The Brazilian has one year left on his deal and The Swans looked to reach a cut-price deal for the 23-year-old, but the two parties have a mismatch in valuation and has effectively ended any future deal being agreed.

Sousa played 30 times for the second-tier Brussels side last season after joining the club from Botafogo in January 2024. They finished third in the division, but failed in the playoffs at the quarter-final stage and will play a second season in the Challenger Pro League under the club’s new name of Daring Brussels.

A report from Wales Online covering the Sousa deal also noted that defence has continued to be a priority for Swansea alongside a new midfielder amid links for Ollie Cooper to leave for Wigan Athletic, with Lewis O’Brien being a leading target for both The Jacks and Hull City.

With both Ricardo Santos and Cameron Burgess joining to assist the existing Ben Cabango, perhaps this move for David Sousa failing is not such a bad thing. Burgess and Santos will be great replacements for the outgoing Harry Darling and Hannes Delcroix, and alongside Cyrus Christie and Kristian Pedersen, Alan Sheehan now has as many as five central defensive options in his side. Full-backs who could cover multiple positions should be the priority, which seems to be the case with talks continuing for Ethan Galbraith from Leyton Orient, according to Wales Online.
