Ipswich Town Handed Blow In Striker Pursuit

Ipswich Town are set to miss out on their potential Liam Delap successor in Patrick Agyemang after reports suggested a deal is close with a Championship rival.

The Tractor Boys are in the market for a new forward after selling the former Manchester City academy graduate for Chelsea earlier this summer, and recent reports have stated that Agyemang was a preferred option to be the new number nine for Kieran McKenna’s side. However, they have been struck a critical blow in that pursuit.

Rivals On Verge Of Deal

According to ESPN, Derby County and Charlotte FC are close to agreeing a deal valued at $7 million (£5.1 million) for Agyemang, who is currently on international duty for the United States. The 24-year-old has scored twice for his nation in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, as the tournament favourites prepare for the quarter-final stages.

John Eustace’s side needed heavy investment in their forward positions after losing both Jerry Yates and Marcus Harness after their loan moves expired, with the pair heading to Swansea City and Ipswich respectively. The Rams have already made a shrewd acquisition in Carlton Morris, who was signed from Luton Town last week.

Agyemang has emerged as a leading light within the United States since the turn of the year, with five goals in nine international appearances on top of the eight goals and two assists he has recorded for Charlotte so far this season.

Writers’ View

This could be viewed as a slight blow to Ipswich Town after missing out on what could have been a great replacement for Liam Delap. Agyemang has tons of potential and has been delivering for the US on the international stage, and could have fit in nicely under Kieran McKenna at Portman Road. However, The Tractor Boys have a very prolific scorer in the Championship with Sammie Szmodics, so they may not feel too agreived with missing out. For Derby County, this move marks a major upturn in fortunes. Signing the 24-year-old alongside Carlton Morris is a major upgrade on their attack from last season and under John Eustace they can push on from last season’s close shave with relegation.
