Ipswich Town have been told to step up their pursuit of Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku amid recent rumours they have joined the race for his signature.
The 23-year-old will bring to an end his four-year stay at the Weston Homes Stadium this summer, with a host of clubs interested in acquiring his services. Newly promoted Championship outfit Birmingham City had long been thought to be heading the queue, with Posh director Barry Fry publicly urging the attacker to join the Blues last month.
It emerged earlier this week that Scottish giants Rangers had now emerged as favourites to land the one-time Ghana international. Any move north of the border would be a significant blow to Peterborough, who would be due a hefty fee should he move to another English club. However, those rules don’t apply outside of the county, and his valuation would be decided by FIFA should he transfer to Scotland.
Since then, Ipswich are the latest team to be credited with an interest. The Tractor Boys are looking to rebuild following their relegation from the Premier League last season.
Ipswich Told To Seal Transfer
The Poku saga is fast turning into one of the transfer stories of the summer in the EFL. There are reportedly well over 20 clubs hoping to seal the deal, but Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie believes a move to Portman Road would suit all parties. Speaking to Football League World, he said:
“Ipswich are the ones that are looking like they could potentially sign him. I know he’s linked with many clubs across the Championship.
“I think Ipswich are going to lose players which they have done up to know. He probably fits the bill for them.
“I really do feel that the way they play, their style, they utilise wingers, wide players, and he’s quite versatile. He could play in a number of areas across the front line.
“So, I think he’d be a really good signing for Ipswich, if that is to come off.”
Writer’s View
Peterborough were understandably keen for their ex-star player to join Birmingham due to the Blues’ financial wealth. It is likely that they would have paid a fair sum, but this is a position which Ipswich can also match. Their rise to the Premier League saw them hit the jackpot last season, whilst they also have inherited a £30 million sum from Liam Delap’s move to Chelsea. It’s surely a move which interests Poku, where he would have the opportunity to work under one of the most highly rated young coaches in English football.
