Bolton Wanderers have secured their fifth signing of the summer after it was confirmed that England under-21 international Teddy Sharman-Lowe has joined on a season-long loan.
The goalkeeper spent last season on loan at League Two outfit Doncaster Rovers. The move provided him with his first taste of EFL football, playing every minute of their title winning campaign.
He returned to parent club Chelsea following the end of the season and it was widely expected that they would send him back out on loan in Leauge One as the next step in his development. Reports emerged earlier this week that Bolton were expected to win the race, which has now been confirmed by the club.
Upon his departure, Chelsea also announced that they had tied the 22-year-old down to a new deal, which is set to run until 2028.
Sharman-Lowe Targeting Second Successive Promotion
The Trotters have already begun building for next season, with Steven Schumacher hoping to end their seven-season stay outside of the Championship. Having already tasted success in his previous temporary stay away from Stamford Bridge, Sharman-Lowe is hungry for more. Speaking to official club media, he said:
“I’m very excited to be here. It’s another great challenge for me. Coming to a club as big as Bolton – with its past in the Premier League as well and aspirations to be back there – I think I can really kick on and it’s another great opportunity for me.
“It’s a beautiful stadium and I’m sure there will be a lot of fans here. I’m very excited to get going and I’m really looking forward to the season.
“Hopefully we can get promoted this year. It’s obviously been the aim for the past few years and there’s a real ambition in the club to get it done this year.”
Writer’s View
Sharman-Lowe was pivotal at Doncaster last season and played a huge role in their eventual title winning exploits. Chelsea believe they have a future first team player on their books and are keen for him to work his way up through the divisions in a series of loan spells. Bolton are a club with big ambitions and one that are expected to challenge at the top end of League One. Doncaster may have been hoping for a reunion but it is uncertain how they will perform on their return to the third tier. Therefore, it makes sense for all parties.
