Rangers’ pursuit of Ipswich Town defender Cameron Burgess is under more threat as another potential destination has emerged.
The Ibrox club has appointed former Southampton boss Russell Martin after failing to usurp Celtic’s dominance in the Scottish Premiership and have already been identifying potential targets. One of those is Ipswich Town’s Cameron Burgess, who featured in half of the Suffolk club’s Premier League games this season.
Corberan Targets New Defender
With Burgess out of contract this month and whilst The Tractor Boys have tabled a new offer to the Australian, interest from elsewhere has emerged. Reports last month suggested that Rangers were interested in the former Salford City defender, amid a rebuild of the Scottish side’s defence.
Spanish club Girona were also interested but a new report from ElDesmarque has revealed that Valencia, led by former West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan, have been in discussions with the 29-year-old about moving to the East of Spain. It has been said that Valencia CEO Ron Gourlay has already met with Burgess about a potential move.
However, any transfer depends on whether Valencia can come to an agreement with the highly-rated Cristhian Mosquera, who is being targeted by Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid. Ipswich Town have already been targeted by clubs for some of their best players following relegation, with Liam Delap already being signed by Chelsea, whilst reports are suggesting centre-back Dara O’Shea is of interest to both Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Writers’ View
Cameron Burgess may have been disappointed as to how much game time he got in the Premier League and that may see him depart at the end of his contract. With Cristhian Mosquera being an in-demand man across Europe, joining Carlos Corberan at Valencia could be an interesting prospect as under the former West Brom boss, they seem to have put their financial worries behind them and are looking up once more. Whilst Rangers is an enticing move, it remains to be seen whether Russell Martin can deliver a title after his appointment last week.
