Norwich City appear poised to secure the services of Ipswich Town’s Under-18s coach, Olly Lee, in a surprise move across the fierce East Anglian football divide.
Lee, the son of former England and West Ham star Robert Lee, only joined Ipswich Town at the beginning of this year. However, it seems his tenure with the Tractor Boys is set to be short-lived as Norwich move in to recruit him.
The potential switch has raised eyebrows given the longstanding rivalry between the two clubs, who share a rivalry dubbed the Old Farm Derby.
Coaching Changes at Norwich
The Canaries’ coaching setup has been undergoing several changes in recent weeks. After the departures of Narcís Pèlach and Paul Clements from the first-team coaching staff, Norwich had to reshuffle. Academy manager Joe Schulberg and goalkeeper coach Declan Rudd were temporarily promoted to first-team duties. More recently, former AC Milan goalkeeping coach Tony Roberts filled the vacancy left by Clements.
If Lee’s move materialises, it won’t be the first instance of coaching staff making the jump between these two fierce East Anglian rivals. Dean Wright, former head of academy coaching at Norwich, crossed the divide to join Ipswich as academy chief back in 2022. This pattern of coaching switches between the clubs adds further fuel to the rivalry that divides the region.
According to reports from TWTD, Lee’s role at Ipswich is currently being temporarily filled by David Wright, who previously held a coaching role at Norwich’s under-23 setup before moving to Ipswich earlier in 2023.
The ongoing adjustments to Norwich’s backroom staff come at a critical point in the season, and Lee’s potential arrival could further bolster the club’s youth development setup. Norwich have long placed a strong emphasis on nurturing young talent, and adding Lee’s experience and coaching pedigree could be seen as a strategic move to strengthen the club’s future prospects.

Writer’s View
The rivalry between Norwich and Ipswich makes any coaching switch between the clubs a talking point, and Olly Lee’s potential move is no exception. While these kinds of transfers are not unheard of, the emotional weight of the East Anglian Derby ensures this one will be closely watched. With Norwich continuing to restructure their staff, Lee’s youth coaching expertise could be a valuable asset, especially as they seek to sharpen their academy’s output in the coming seasons.
