Sheffield United Join Premier League Suitors For Wolves Man

Sheffield United are reportedly interested in bringing Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Tommy Doyle back to Bramall Lane, according to a Yorkshire Post report.

Doyle spent time on loan with the Blades back in 2022.

Blades Face Top-Flight Competition

Ruben Selles’ side isn’t the only one eyeing a potential move for the 23-year-old midfielder as fellow Championship side Birmingham City are said to be keen alongside Premier League new boys Sunderland.

The Blades must act fast if they are to be reunited with a man who played over 30 times for them during a successful Championship promotion campaign. That is because reports suggest Birmingham are in advanced talks over a loan move for Doyle.

Speculation surrounding Doyle has intensified as the former Manchester City youth product has found his role at Molineux to be a supporting one. Last season he played 24 times in the Premier League but only twice did he complete 90 minutes.

Just What The Blades Need

If Selles can convince Doyle that Sheffield is the place to be, it could prove to be a shrewd piece of business, particularly with speculation surrounding some of their star men.

Rumours have been swirling over the futures of Gustavo Hamer and Vinicius Souza, with the influential pair tipped to depart S2 this summer.

Between them, Hamer and Souza added creativity and defensive solidity to a Blades side that ultimately fell short of their objective. Now, with Chris Wilder gone and Selles at the helm, a rebuild to achieve Premier League could kickstart with Doyle.

Is Doyle Finished At Wolves?

As teams circulate for Doyle’s signature, it does appear that the one certainty is that he won’t be playing a role at Wolves, at least not this season.

Discussing Doyle back in April, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira appeared to state that his side is not the one for Doyle.

“We are not a team to have 80 per cent of possession, so he has problems. If we are a team that has the ball every time, doesn’t allow counter-attacks and keeps the ball to dominate the opponent, this is the team for him.”

“But we need to understand that we face top teams, top players. We need to run a lot and he’s missing this physicality, especially when we play with two midfielders.”

“With three midfielders, I believe he is a 10 with high quality. The last pass, shots, crosses – he has those skills.”

Writer’s View

The acquisition of Doyle would be something of a coup for Sheffield United, particularly with Premier League interest in the player. His signing could prove a masterstroke to replace Hamer, should he depart as rumoured.

The midfielder’s time at Wolves, certainly under Pereira, appears to be over so it is up to him to choose a side that suits him.
