Lincoln City Confirm Significant Capture From Local Rivals

Lincoln City have confirmed the return of Joe Hutchinson as head of talent identification, replacing long-serving scout Marc Tracy.

The move sees Hutchinson rejoin the Imps from Grimsby Town, where he had served as head of recruitment since 2022.

Recruitment Reshuffle as Hutchinson Returns to LNER Stadium

Hutchinson’s appointment marks a key development in Lincoln’s summer preparations following the departure of Marc Tracy, who recently took up a senior analyst role with Luton Town. The Imps have acted quickly to secure a familiar face, with Hutchinson previously spending three years at the club before departing under former manager Mark Kennedy.

His time at Grimsby Town has been viewed positively within recruitment circles. While the Mariners’ results fluctuated, players such as George McEachran and Denver Hume were identified as value signings—Hume in particular is now thought to be on Lincoln’s radar.

City’s director of football Jez George praised both men while outlining the club’s approach to continuity:

“Firstly, I would like to thank Marc Tracy for his commitment, dedication and contribution across his seven years at Lincoln City. Marc is unique. He lives and breathes football, loves being at games and knows everyone in football. He leaves with our blessing and our gratitude for his relentless hard work over such a long period of time.

“Identifying a like-for-like replacement for Marc is impossible, so instead we have moved quickly to secure someone we know, and who knows us and how we work, with a different skillset but hugely talented in identifying players.

“Joe was instrumental in recruiting the squad that reached the League One play-off final, including the likes of Brennan Johnson and Morgan Rogers, and I really look forward to working with him again.”

Hutchinson’s prior impact at Lincoln included helping build the 2020/21 squad that reached the League One play-off final. His blend of data-led insight and on-the-ground scouting made him a valuable figure within the Imps’ modernised football operations team. This return reunites him with a structure he helped develop and an organisation that continues to stress long-term stability.

George concluded by assuring supporters that preparations for the current transfer window remain on course:

“We have created robust structures and processes that are not solely dependent on any individual, particularly in recruitment, so nothing will change in the short-term. We have already planned for this transfer window so we are continuing to meet and speak with targets in what will be a seamless transition.”

Writer’s View

This is a well-executed appointment by Lincoln City. Joe Hutchinson is already embedded in the club’s identity, understands its analytical approach, and offers continuity during a potentially volatile period. The fact that the club had this move lined up before Marc Tracy’s departure was confirmed is further evidence of the Imps’ mature and proactive structure.

Recruitment departments often operate in the shadows, but this quick, smart move shows the value of long-term planning—and highlights why Lincoln continue to be regarded as one of League One’s most forward-thinking clubs.
