Lincoln City Linked With Swoop For 26-Year-Old

Lincoln City have been linked with a move for former Sunderland and Portsmouth full-back Denver Hume.

A report from the Grimsby Telegraph has created speculation that the Imps are exploring a deal for the 26-year-old.

Lincoln Eye Free Agent Hume Amid Left-Back Search

The Imps’ need for an experienced, ready-made left-back may be addressed with the potential arrival of Denver Hume, following confirmation that the Imps are interested in the former Sunderland man.

Hume spent last season with Grimsby Town in League Two, initially joining on a short-term deal in February 2024. After impressing in the Mariners’ push for the play-offs, he earned a one-year contract extension in June. During the campaign, the attacking full-back was a standout performer, at one stage recording more assists than any other defender in English football.

His attacking output remains his biggest strength. Hume created more chances than any other left-back in League Two last season, ranking in the top percentile for crossing accuracy and success. His overlapping runs and set-piece delivery were a crucial part of Grimsby’s attacking strategy.

Having come through the ranks at Sunderland, Hume made his senior debut in 2018 and scored his first professional goal in 2020 against Wycombe Wanderers. In January 2022, he made the move to Portsmouth but struggled to nail down a consistent starting role at Fratton Park. His move to Grimsby marked a fresh opportunity, which he has clearly seized.

Hume is now a free agent once again, and his experience at both League One and League Two levels makes him a particularly attractive option for clubs looking for immediate impact without a transfer fee.

Writer’s View

It’s no surprise to see Demver Hume’s name linked with bigger clubs now that his Grimsby contract has expired. At 26, he represents exactly the type of signing Lincoln City need — experienced, attack-minded, and immediately available without a fee.

There will, of course, be stiff competition. Free agents with proven production and League One experience are in demand, and Lincoln’s wage offering is unlikely to match some of their rivals. However, if they can act quickly and decisively, this is the sort of move that could upgrade the side in a key position.

The fact that Hume has already been on the radar internally suggests this isn’t a speculative link — there’s genuine interest. Whether that materialises into a deal depends on budget, timing, and the player’s own ambitions, but from a footballing perspective, Hume would be a smart addition.
