Pundit Warns Middlesbrough Over Managerial Appointment

Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie has warned Middlesbrough against appointing Sean Dyche as Michael Carrick’s successor.

The Teessiders opted to part company with their long-standing boss earlier this week following a disappointing 10th-placed finish. It represented the second successive season in which Boro had failed to reach the play-offs, with it decided that a fresh face will be required to lead the team forward.

Rumours emerged earlier this week that the second tier outfit were plotting an ambitious swoop for former Burnley and Everton boss Sean Dyche. The 53-year-old has been out of work since leaving Goodison Park in January.

Better Options Available, Says Hendrie

Although it is unlikely that Dyche would consider dropping into the Championship, ex-Aston Villa midfielder Hendrie believes the pair wouldn’t be a good match anyway. Speaking to Football League Worldhe said:

“I think he’s completely different to the way and the style that they’re trying to adapt to.

“I think what Michael Carrick’s done is give them a real platform now to really go on, they’ve got close over seasons playing the way that they have done – so that’s why bringing in maybe a Robbie Keane, a Rob Edwards to that extent – I think that would be a better fit.

“Sean Dyche will always be one of them managers that people sort of look at his style of play and sometimes think that it’s not the right thing and it’s not the right fit – I don’t think it is for Boro at this moment in time.”

Continuing, Hendrie stated that the Boro job is probably not one that would tickle Dyche’s fancy:

“I think Sean will be waiting for something that maybe might come around, you know one of the first managers that’ll be sacked probably at the lower end of the Premier League, maybe where he can step in and do a great job like he did at Everton.”

Writer’s View

There’s no doubt that Sean Dyche is a highly effective manager. He already has two Championship promotions under his belt and would certainly have Middlesbrough challenging at the right end of the table should he make the move to the Riverside Stadium. However, it’s questionable as to whether he has the right players to fit his preferred system and a complete overhaul of playing staff may be required as a result. All this is unlikely, especially as Dyche will feel he is an established Premier League manager. As Hendrie said, expect him to end up at a lower top tier club in the early stages of next season.
